Backroom Briefing: Landing Jobs Via the Launch Pad
Gov. Ron DeSantis is looking beyond military benefits as he continues to pitch Florida to house the command headquarters of President Donald Trump’s proposed Space Force military branch.
DeSantis envisions Space Force as another cog in renewed growth of the iconic space industry around Cape Canaveral, which has seen a slow resurgence as private companies --- spurred by a space race among billionaires --- look to reduce costs by manufacturing launch vehicles close to the pads.
Supreme Court Blocks Census Citizenship Question
The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked --- at least for now --- a citizenship question from being asked in the 2020 census, saying the Trump administration offered a “contrived” explanation as to why it was needed.
The opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, eased Florida Democrats’ concerns that a citizenship question in Florida, which is a magnet for immigrants, would lead to an undercount of the state’s population.
Shannon Bream From Fox News Looks Back on First Democratic Debate, Looks Ahead to Second One
With the first round over and another scheduled for Thursday night as the crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls debate in Miami, Sunshine State News reached out to Shannon Bream from Fox News Channel for her thoughts.
Vern Buchanan Gets Medicare Assistance Program Through Key Committee
From his seat on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., was able to advance through the committee a proposal to fund the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which helps with Medicare and insurance questions and problems, for another three years.
As part of a large Medicare bill, on Wednesday the House Ways and Means Committee included the “Enhancing Consumer Assistance for Medicare Beneficiaries Act” from Buchanan, U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich.
Trump Team's Statement on the First Democratic Debate
The president had said earlier in the day he wouldn’t be live-tweeting the Democratic presidential debate in Miami because he would be on Air Force One en route to Japan and off “to save the world.”
But roughly half an hour into the Wednesday night debate, Donald Trump fired off two tweets -- one with the word "BORING!" and the other castigating NBC for its technical glitch, an opportunity to call the network "fake news."
First-Night Democratic Debaters Struggle to Explain Nation's Economic Prosperity
In a nationally televised debate Wednesday night -- featuring half a cattle car of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates -- the first 10 stood in alphabetical order on a Miami stage arguing with their party, with each other, of course with President Donald Trump. But mostly, they were introducing themselves to America, doing their darndest to stand out in a crowd.
Fans, Media, Politicians Agree: Rays Struck Out
The few remaining wisps of goodwill remaining between Tampa Bay and its Major League Baseball franchise evaporated this week when team owner Stu Sternberg floated a fantasy of having his Rays split its home games with the City of Montreal.
Reaction was swift and negative with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, calling the hare-brained scheme “nonsensical” and a possible violation of the team’s agreement with the City of St. Petersburg. The attendance-challenged Rays currently schedule all 81 home games at St. Pete’s Tropicana Field.
Sheriff Urges 'Harm Mitigation' for School Shootings
Three minutes and 51 seconds.
That’s how long it took Nikolas Cruz to kill 17 students and staff members and injure another 17 during last year’s shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
And that’s the timeframe Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri repeated again and again during a presentation to law enforcement officers and educators in Havana Wednesday, as he warned that more school shootings are inevitable.
