Harris Aside, Biden Still Wins One-Third of Democratic Voters

July 1, 2019 - 7:00am
I Beg to Differ

Joe Biden undoubtedly has to pedal harder. But to hear a gleeful mainstream media tell it on Sunday morning news programs, after the release of the first post-debate poll results Sen. Kamala Harris plunged the former vice president down the hopper.

That's absurd. Look realistically at what happened in Miami last Thursday.

According to Morning Consult polling, Biden lost 5 points to Harris of California, the night's debate winner. That's a big number for a candidate few voters knew much about.

What's Going on the Week of June 30

July 1, 2019 - 7:00am

Monday might seem like an otherwise unremarkable summer day. Or maybe a chance to get away and start the Fourth of July holiday a little early.

But in state government, Monday is one of the biggest days of the year.

That’s because July 1 is when the new state budget and dozens of freshly signed laws take effect.

Lake City Latest Florida Victim to Pay ‘Ransomware’ Hackers

June 29, 2019 - 9:00am

Another Florida city has succumbed to a “ransomware” attack and paid off cyber-extortionists in exchange for a decryption key to regain access to much of its paralyzed computer systems.

The Lake City City Council agreed to pay 42 Bitcoin -- about $460,000 to $480,000 --to end a cyber-attack that began June 10 and disabled the city’s email, online utility payment programs and even its phone system.

Bitcoin, a cyber-currency difficult to trace, is the preferred exchange tender in what is becoming a growing menace to cities and utilities nationwide.

June 29, 2019 - 9:00am

Lawmakers seeking to slap gambling-addiction warnings on state lottery tickets and advertising once again failed to scratch out a winner.

On Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis, noting potential impacts to money for education, vetoed a controversial bill (HB 629) that sought to require the following warnings to be prominently displayed on the front of all lottery tickets: “Warning: Lottery games may be addictive,” or “Play responsibly.”

On the Battlefield or Here at Home, Highly Skilled CRNAs are Saving Lives

Capt. Matthew Popejoy, MS, CRNA, ANC, USAR

As we Americans look ahead to a long Fourth of July weekend, this is often a time when the nation’s thoughts turn to the members of our military forces who have the responsibility to protect our precious freedoms. For me, this year’s holiday is especially meaningful, as I prepare to be deployed sometime this year in a very different and challenging role: as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

Kathy Castor's Proposal Gives the FTC More Power to Pursue Companies Targeting Children's Data

June 29, 2019 - 9:00am
Kathy Castor

This week, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., was able to get an amendment added to an appropriations bill and though the U.S. House to protect children’s privacy by giving the federal government more power to go after companies that mine their data.

Noting that increasingly companies are mining children’s data, Castor proposed giving the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) more power to target bad actors. After her amendment was added to the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act on Wednesday, Castor weighed in on her reasons for introducing it.

Rubio Dead Set against the Left Packing the Supreme Court

July 1, 2019 - 7:00am
Marco Rubio

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is doubling down on his proposal for a constitutional amendment to limit the U.S. Supreme Court to nine justices.

Earlier this year, prominent Democrats, including former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and presidential candidates U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, have mulled over expanding the Supreme Court

On Night 2 of Democratic Presidential Hopefuls' Debate, the March to the Left Quickens

June 28, 2019 - 6:45am
Joe Biden, Bernie Sander, Kamala Harris

If Thursday night in Miami proved anything, it was that the middle ground within the Democratic Party is sinking fast. Moderation is losing. It's grown old and unattractive, apparently, and as creaky as a farmhouse staircase.
