Former Reporter Heading Hometown Democracy Campaign

The St. Petersburg Times broke the story that Julie Hauserman has been named as campaign manager for the Florida Hometown Democracy measure on the ballot in November. Of course as Hauserman used to serve as a reporter covering environmental and political issues for the Times, they may have had an exclusive. The measure, listed on the November ballot as Amendment 4, would require direct voter approval of any local land-use changes instead of leaving it in the hands of city and county commissioners.

Republicans in Space

At the Republican convention in Orlando last weekend, Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp revealed that he has been talking to Gov. Charlie Crist about aggressively weighing in on President Obamas plan to scrap NASAs plans for manned flights to the moon.

Kottkamp stressed that the budget cutswould mean the loss of at least 7,000 jobs directly on the Space Coast with 13,000 jobs being lost indirectly. As one of his duties in the Crist administration, Kottkamp serves as Chairman of the Space Florida Board of Directors.

Speaker in Waiting Chris Dorworth

Earlier this afternoon, state Rep. Eric Fresen, R-Miami, pulled out of thecontest to be the leader of the Republican House conference for the 2014-2016 legislative session. This means that state Rep. Chris Dorworth, R-Lake Mary, is going to be state House Speaker in four years.

Yes, you read that right. Florida now has a House Speaker waiting in the wings for four years down the road.

A Sunshiney Day for Florida News

Florida's been languishing in darkeness for too long. For too long we've had to rely on the mainstream media to deliver bias views of the important politics of our state. For too long, we've watched the other journalists simply chase each other's tale.

Following the pack just doesn't work for us anymore.

Obama Lacks One Crucial Ingredient -- Intuition

February 22, 2010 - 6:00pm

No president enters office knowing everything he needs to know. His experience is limited to some greater or lesser extent; his knowledge of the people from whom he will choose appointees is incomplete; his mastery of the substance of public policy, after years on the campaign trail, is likely to be out of date. And like all of us, he does not know what the future will bring.

So presidents must rely on something else, something intangible and unquantifiable, in determining what is within the realm of possibility and what is a bridge too far: intuition.

Liquidating the Empire

February 22, 2010 - 6:00pm

A decade ago, Oldsmobile went. Last year, Pontiac. Saturn, Saab and Hummer were discontinued. A thousand GM dealerships shut down.

To those who grew up in a "GM family," where buying a Chrysler was like converting to Islam, what happened to GM was deeply saddening.

Yet the amputations had to be done -- or GM would die.

And the same may be about to happen to the American Imperium.

Just Shoot Me: A Conservative Defends Alec Baldwin

February 22, 2010 - 6:00pm

Go ahead and throw mud at me. Kick me. Call me a Republican In Name Only. I don't care. This time, I'm siding with Alec Baldwin.

The actor and liberal activist (and loud "vocalist") recently was rushed to a New York City hospital. It seems that his 14-year-old daughter, Ireland, phoned 911 and said Baldwin was in bad shape and may have suffered an overdose of some sort.

Porn and Valentine's Day

February 22, 2010 - 6:00pm

Valentine's Day fell on a Sunday this year, which could be celebrated as a day where our lifelong romantic love builds a foundation for our families and our faith. Or, to television executives, it could be a holiday for infidelity and pornography.

The cable channel G4 -- little known except to video-game junkies, including young boys -- announced they would host a "Romance-Free Valentine's Day," where viewers "looking for an escape from the mush can turn to the only network that will showcase unfaithful lovers and naughty adult superstars to commemorate Cupid's holy day."
