Who's in Charge?
On the eve of the 2010 legislative session, all the upper echelons of state government are in flux. Lawmakers are facing a lame-duck governor running for U.S. Senate, a Senate president running for chief financial officer and the CFO and attorney general running for governor. And that's not all.
Unfinished business
Much like the upcoming spring season, the start of the state Legislative session can be a time for rejuvenation. While some lawmakers are eager to propose new bills, others are awaiting renewed talks or progress on legislation proposed last session. And more than few of these long-stewing pieces of legislation could have a dramatic affect on business and state revenues.
There are long- embattled proposals, such as Gov. Charlie Crists attempt to win big for the state and his budget through expanded gambling rights at Seminole casinos.
Standing Pat Patterson
State Rep. Pat Patterson, R-DeLand, is running for the state CFO post.
Really.
Sure, Patterson had no presence at the Republican convention in Orlando last weekend. Never mind that Pattersons rival for the GOP nomination state Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, has $1.6 million as opposed to the $64,135.17 that Patterson raised (of which $40,000 came from Pattersons previous campaigns). Ignore the fact that the Patterson for CFO websites latest news is that he launched the campaign back on July 1. Pat Patterson insists that he is running for CFO.

George LeMieux, meet John Kerry
George LeMieux might only be a recent addition to the U.S. Senate but he is already acting like a veteran of the Beltway.
On February 22, LeMieux joined a majority of his fellow Republicans in voting against cloture for the Obama administration jobs bill, trying to keep it off the Senate floor. The measure passed due to a number of Republicans, most notably new U.S. Senator Scott Brown, R-Mass, voting with the Democrats. Having voted to keep the bill off the floor, LeMieux then supported the jobs package as it passed the Senate on February 24.

Tax Delay Fast-Tracked
The Legislature is poised to act quickly and positively to delay for two years a major increase in the unemployment compensation tax.
It's a move that could save beleaguered employers as much as a twelvefold increase on their unemployment tax bills.
The legislation zipped through both Senate and House committees. Its supporters claim it will stimulate job creation and allow businesses to stay afloat in a down economy.
