Fla. Plays Catch-Up with Port Expansion

With ports in other states gearing up for the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014, Florida ports are trying to keep pace with a little help from the Legislature.

The Florida Ports Investment Act, a bill sponsored by Rep. Lake Ray, R-Jacksonville, offers $100 million in tax incentives to make Florida ports competitive in an increasingly competitive national and international marketplace. It passed the House Finance and Tax Council Thursday without any opposition.

What's good for the masses should be good for all on Capitol Hill

As expected, the new health-care legislation contains loopholes that exempt certain congressional staffers.

Rep. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, saw this coming and today joined 17 other members of Congress in introducing a bill that would eliminate the special health care reform exemption for certain congressional staff so that all legislative branch employees are treated the same.

After a tense debate heavy with consequences for school system, the Senate passed a state constitutional amendment that would loosen class-size restrictions.

Senate Joint Resolution 2, sponsored mainly by Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, passed the Senate 26-10. The vote closely followed party lines and the debate largely followed party arguments, with one notable exception that left the chamber pregnant with anticipation.

That's right, the Democrats did pass a health care bill that a plurality of Americans opposed. And it is in so many ways an awful piece of jumbled-up law. But it will not be the wedge issue that can in November deliver back to the Republicans those marginally safe seats now held by Democrats.

Tax time for Crist; he awaits Rubio

In the spirit of the season, Gov. Charlie Crist released his last 10 years of tax returns.

Although not required, Crist released his returns along with his Financial Disclosure forms with the Florida Commission on Ethics.

Crist's latest return, from 2008, shows him filing separately from his wife, Carole Lynn Crist. The "Married, Filing Separately" status usually indicates a large disparity between spousal incomes.

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Florida, introduced a bill in Congress to repeal health-care reforms that President Barack Obama signed into law on Tuesday.
