Crist Disappears from Republican Party Website

The Republican Party of Florida isn't waiting for Gov. Charlie Crist to leave the party. The RPOF just kicked him off its home page.

Crist's smiling mug and a quote from the "People's Governor" topped the party's website -- until today. That high-profile banner treatment now rotates between Attorney General Bill McCollum, who is running to replace Crist in the governor's office, and Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp, who is running for attorney general.

With Gov. Charlie Crist leaving the Republican Party on Thursday to continue his campaign for the U.S. Senate as an independent, he can find little comfort in Florida history:

Panel Begins Race to Top Revamp

April 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

A panel appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist started Wednesday morning to refurbish the state's bid for a chunk of the federal Race to the Top grant, which could bring the state $700 million in funding for education.

Florida came in fourth in the first round of competition for a piece of the $4.35 billion grant that the Obama administration is doling out to states who can create a bold change in education. Florida was widely expected to win in the first round, but only Delaware and Tennessee were awarded money.

Maurice Ferre Takes Aim at Kendrick Meek

April 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre has filed paperwork in Tallahassee for his campaign for the Democratic nomination for the U.S Senate election.

While the Ferre campaign has raised $130,000, including $20,000 from a loan, the campaign had less than $3,500 cash on hand at the end of the first quarter of 2010. This is a fraction of the funds that Ferres chief rival for the Democratic nomination, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, has raised. Meek had more than $3.7 million cash on hand at the end of the same period.

Senate Debates Redistricting

April 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

With the House passing a similar measure Monday, senators from both parties fought to have a proposed amendment mandating the state follow federal guidelines during redistricting at both the congressional and state levels.

'Sen. Crist': Winner or Loser for Florida?

April 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

As an "independent" senator, Charlie Crist would be in a position to leverage his vote for Florida's greater good, political observers say.

Or, in the words of another, he would be "largely ineffective."

If Crist beats Marco Rubio and Kendrick Meek in the fall election, "neither party would be terribly happy with him as he will be perceived as denying them a win," said Roger Stone, a veteran political consultant who worked on Ronald Reagan's 1984 campaign.

Ultrasounds May Be Required For Women Seeking Abortions

April 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

In a late development that provoked resistance from Democrats and all female senators but one, the Senate amended a health care bill to require that pregnant women in their first trimester submit to an ultrasound when seeking an abortion.

On the eve of Charlie Crist's anticipated announcement that he will bolt the GOP to run for U.S. Senate independently, longtime Crist ally Jay Burmer grabbed headlines Wednesday with revelations of his $316,000 deal with the Republican Party of Florida.

Ford, GM Sales Are Driving Higher

April 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

Ford's strong first quarter and General Motors' early repayment of federal loans translated into improved sales in Florida, dealers say.
