New Law Boosts Enrollment in Tax Credit Voucher

July 27, 2011 - 6:00pm

Thanks to tinkering from the Florida Legislature, enrollment in Florida's corporate tax credit vouchers soared last year, with a 20 percent increase in students.

The enrollment surge coincided with an apparent increase in demand for the voucher program. Step Up For Students, the administrator of the corporate tax credit scholarship, said Wednesday that it had to stop accepting applications in May when it hit 33,000 new students. Last year, the program cut off new applicants in September.

Liberals Behaving Badly: Florida Redistricting Hearings

July 26, 2011 - 6:00pm

As if the job of redrawing 187 congressional and legislative districts weren't complicated enough, liberal groups are ascribing the worst possible motives to Florida lawmakers assigned to the task.

At nearly a dozen public-input meetings conducted around the state over the past month, representatives from the ACLU, the NAACP and the League of Women Voters, among others, have read nearly identical scripts assailing the redistricting process.

Florida Accountability Group Raises More Red Flags Over Pipeline Deal

Floridians for Government Accountability added its voice on Thursday to the concerns over a proposed sale of a natural-gas pipeline that serves the state.

Chairman James Hart said his group is "closely monitoring" negotiations by two rival companies to acquire Southern Union, which owns the Florida Gas Transmission pipeline.

Sunshine State News reported last week that the Williams Cos. and Energy Transfer Equity are vying to buy the pipeline. Industry observers say a Williams purchase could run afoul of antitrust laws.

With state Senate President Mike Haridopolos out of the race, former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner is getting some backing from Republicans in the Legislature for his bid to win the Republican nomination to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012. On Wednesday, Hasner announced he won the endorsements of both Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, and Rep. Scott Plakon, R-Longwood.

Florida Repubs: If Feds Default, Congress Shouldn't Get Paid

July 26, 2011 - 6:00pm

Two Florida Republican congressmen, Tom Rooney and Vern Buchanan, said on Wednesday that they intended to co-sponsor a proposal from a Tennessee Democrat that would cut off congressional pay if the federal government reached a default.

U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., said Tuesday that he will introduce a measure that will end congressional salaries -- and ensure that they would not be paid retroactively -- if the current stalemate in Washington over raising the federal debt ceiling was not ended by Aug. 2.

Obama Losing Base on Debt Ceiling; Nelson Feels Heat

July 26, 2011 - 6:00pm

While the White House and Congress look for ways to raise the nation's debt ceiling, three-quarters of Floridians are at least "somewhat wary" of the move, a poll reported Wednesday.

Viewpoint Florida, surveying 826 likely voters, found that 76 percent opposed President Barack Obama's initial call for a "clean" debt-ceiling increase with no corresponding budget cuts.

In more bad news for the president, 57 percent disapproved of Obama's handling of the negotiations. Nearly one in four said they opposed any increase in the debt ceiling on any terms.
