Mark Sharpe Looks to Take on Kathy Castor

Hillsborough County Commissioner Mark Sharpe announced Monday that he is planning to enter the Republican primary to take on Democratic U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor.

"I am going to file the paperwork for the United States Congress District 11, Sharpe announced at a meeting in Tampa Monday morning.

The new candidates announcement was quickly forwarded by the Hillsborough County Republicans via Twitter.

Rick Scott Offers Update in the Fight Against Pill Mills

Gov. Rick Scott insisted on Monday that the state government was winning the war against pill mills, noting that there were almost 940 arrests since he set up a strike force in March. So far, the state has arrested 17 doctors, taken more than 252,000 pills and confiscated almost $1.7 million in assets.

RPOF Scolds Florida Dem Chair Smith Over Redistricting Hypocrisy

Dave Bitner, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, sent his counterpart, Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith, a letter Monday taking him to task for his apparent "hypocrisy" surrounding his stance on the redistricting process.

Specifically, the letter notes Smith's current criticism of the existing legislative and congressional districts, but voted for them in committee as a member of the Legislature in 2002.

Conservative Writer Marielena Stuart Enters Senate Race

Conservative writer and activist Marielena Montesino de Stuart entered the increasingly crowded Republican primary Mondayto take on Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012.

Born in Cuba,her family fled from Fidel Castros communist regime in the late 1960s after standing against that tyrannical government. Stuart, whose writings have regularly appearedonconservative website RenewAmerica, currently lives in Ave Maria.

I consider myself to be the conservative candidate in this race, Stuart told Sunshine State News on Monday.

Bondi on Fox: Get Obamacare Challenge to Supreme Court ASAP

Attorney General Pam Bondi took to Fox this morning to push for the lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act to be forwarded to the Supreme Court "as fast as possible."

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals announced a decision Friday declaring the individual mandate portion of the law, commonly known as Obamacare, unconstitutional, but left the remainder of the law in place.

Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann Expected for Florida's P5 Straw Poll

Two of the hottest Republican properties -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann -- are expected to compete in the Florida straw poll Sept. 24, GOP officials say.

Though neither has yet confirmedattendance, spokesman Brian Hughes said the party expects to receive RSVPs from both, perhaps this week.

U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who finished a close second to Bachmann in the Iowa straw poll, has already confirmed.

Presidency 5 opens with a Fox News debate on Sept. 22 in Orlando.

Don and Matt Gaetz Back Rick Perry for 2012 GOP Nomination

Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and he is already getting the support of one of Floridas leading GOP families -- both incoming Senate President Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, and his son Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Shalimar, endorsed him.

Governor Perry knows the recipe for job creation and enhanced opportunity, said Matt Gaetz. For a decade he has led Texas to responsibly streamline government and attract new businesses. Nearly half of the jobs created in America in the last 18 months were created in Texas. Thats a record to run on.

Herman Cain Lowers Expectations in Iowa and New Hampshire

There were a few candidates who came out of the Iowa straw poll on Saturday worse off than they entered. Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota -- who dropped out of the race on Sunday morning -- is an obvious example. So is former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, who won the event in 2007 and skipped it this time around. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who announced earlier on Saturday, beat Romney on write-in votes for sixth place in the event.

Adam Hasner Hammers George LeMieux at Conservative Event

While Texas Gov. Rick Perry announcing that he was seeking the Republican presidential nomination dominated the headlines that emerged from the RedState event in Charleston, S.C., over the weekend, former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, now running in the Republican primary to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, spoke to the meeting as well. In the speech, Hasner took aim at one one of his rivals for the GOP nod -- former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux.

Hasner issued a call to arms, calling for conservatives to get mobilized and active in 2012.
