Selection Begins Friday for GOP Primary Committee

A state committee tasked with selecting a date for the presidential preference primary will meet Sept. 23, setting up a potential confrontation between Florida Republicans and the national party.

Members of the committee are expected to be named beginning Friday. A spokeswoman for House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, said he would announce his appointments then, while a spokeswoman for Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, said his selections would be made "in the next few days." Gov. Rick Scott will also appoint members to the panel.

The state teachers' union was "crying wolf" when it claimed that "thousands" of school workers would be laid off this year, says the head of the Florida School Boards Association.

Florida GOP, Democrats Split on NLRB-Boeing Bill in Congress

Florida's Republican congressional delegation solidly supported a measure Thursday that would prohibit the National Labor Relations Board from ordering any employer to close, relocate or transfer employment.

Spurred by the controversial NLRB sanctions directed at Boeing's new South Carolina plant, HR 2587 was supported by all Florida GOP congressmen except for Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Orlando, who did not vote.

Though eight Democrats joined Republicans in voting aye, all nine of Florida's Democratic lawmakers opposed the bill.

U.S. House GOP Backs Florida Manufacturers on Jobs Act

The vote backedthe efforts of Florida manufacturers in favor of the bill, the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act, that would limit the National Labor Relation Boards power to say where a company set up shop and who they hire.

With unemployment at 10.7 percent in Florida, our government should not be creating policies that hurt employers ability to create jobs, Barney Bishop, Associated Industries of Florida president and CEO, stated in a release.

With the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) hosting a straw poll as part of its Presidency 5 meeting next week in Orlando, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas is in solid shape in the Sunshine State.

Perry topped an Insider Advantage/Florida Times Union poll released on Thursday with 29 percent. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, who has downplayed the P5 straw poll, placed second with 20 percent.
