Student Ballot Implores FSU President to Refuse Tuition Hikes

Florida State University students will be asked next week to urge FSU President Eric Barron to refuse further increases in tuition.

A tuition increase referendum is on the ballot as part of the Student Government Association's elections on Wednesday.

Tuition was raised 15 percent for in-state undergraduate students at all 11 public universities in the spring.

National Unemployment Remains at 14 Million Out of Work

Unemployment held at 9.1 percent for September, with roughly 14 million listed as unemployed, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Employers added 103,000 workers, mostly in health care and other professional services, due in part to 45,000 telecommunications workers returning to payrolls after being on strike in August.

Meanwhile, federal, state and local government jobs continue to be cut, dropping 34,000 in September. The U.S. Postal Service eliminated 5,000 positions.

Haridopolos Defends Prison Privatization Effort

Senate President Mike Haridopolos is defending the states prison privatization effort as being conducted openly in the sunshine, as a decision is expected soon whether the state will appeal a circuit judges rejection of the jail maintenance plans.

Haridopolos contends the legislative directive was heard by legislative committees before being included in the budget prior to the approval of the fiscal plan.

Three of the dark-horse candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, all of them former governors, have placed their bets on New Hampshire as they look to score a breakthrough in the Granite State, which hosts the first presidential primary. Long shots have done well in New Hampshire before, as the likes of Eugene McCarthy, George McGovern, Paul Tsongas and Pat Buchanan scored well in the Granite State during their presidential bids.

Zogby Poll: Cain Up 20% on GOP Field, Tops Obama

Businessman and author Herman Cain has opened a 20-point lead over the rest of the Republican field and he would be the only GOP candidate to defeat President Obama if the election were held today, according to the latest IBOPE Zogby interactive poll.

The numbers offer a vastly different snapshot from other polls released this week.

Mitt Romney Names Florida Finance Team

Leading the pack of Republican presidential hopefuls in most national polls, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts continued to build in Florida this week as he unveiled his finance team for the Sunshine State on Thursday.

I am proud to announce my Florida finance team, said Romney in a statement. Having the resources to go up against President Obama and his billion-dollar campaign will be necessary for success in November 2012. Their hard work will be crucial to my efforts in Florida and across the country.

Rick Scott to Meet with Two Newspaper Editorial Boards

Gov. Rick Scott has a pair of newspaper editorial board sit-downs on his schedule for Friday.

A week after meeting for an hour with the Sun-Sentinel editorial board, Scott is expected to visit two papers from his hometown area.

According to his schedule, at 2 p.m. Scott will be at the Naples Daily News and at 4 p.m. he's to appear before the Fort Myers News-Press.

Occupying the steps of the old courthouse in downtown Tampa, raucous protesters chanted "This is Our House" Thursday night after a daylong "Occupy Tampa" demonstration.

More than 500 people massed at Lykes Gaslight Park for a downtown march that followed along the lines of the Occupy Wall Street protests entering their third week in New York City.
