National Unemployment Remains at 14 Million Out of Work

Unemployment held at 9.1 percent for September, with roughly 14 million listed as unemployed, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Employers added 103,000 workers, mostly in health care and other professional services, due in part to 45,000 telecommunications workers returning to payrolls after being on strike in August.

Meanwhile, federal, state and local government jobs continue to be cut, dropping 34,000 in September. The U.S. Postal Service eliminated 5,000 positions.

Since April, the nations unemployment rate has hovered between 9 percent and 9.2 percent, with 6.2 million people having been jobless for 27 weeks or more.

The White House blogged that the numbers remain too high.

"The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.1 percent, a level that is unacceptably high," according to the White House statement. "Clearly, we need faster economic growth to put Americans back to work."

Floridas unemployment rate has held at 10.7 percent for the past three months. The Agency for Workforce Innovation is scheduled to release September numbers on Oct. 21.

Breakdowns of national unemployment percentages are:

Men: 8.8 percent.

Women: 16 percent.

Teenagers: 24.6 percent.

White: 8 percent.

Black: 16 percent.

Hispanic: 11.3 percent.

Asians: 7.8 percent.
