Curiosity Launched on its Mission from Florida to Mars

The Mars Science Laboratory, carrying a car-sized rover named Curiosity, lifted off on time, 10:02 a.m. Saturday, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station aboard an Atlas V rocket.

FAMU Chairman: Ammons has 'Responded Appropriately'

Florida A&M University board of trustee chairman Solomon L. Badger backs the suspension of activities for the Florida A&M Marching 100 as an investigation is underway into the death of a drum major.

Badger released a statement Friday supporting the efforts of university president James Ammons, who has also appointed a task force, led by former Attorney General Bob Butterworth and Quincy Police Chief Walt McNeil, to investigate the Oct. 19 death of drum major Robert Champion in Orlando.

Hazing has been alleged.

Port Everglades Ready to Hoist the One-Day Cruise Record

Saturday, Nov. 26, is one of two occasions this season when Port Everglades expects to break its own world record for the most cruise passengers departing a port in a single day.

A projected 55,000 passengers are expected to travel through the port to board eight cruise ships Saturday and on March 17, 2012, during the peak of spring break, the port reported.

Part of the reasons for the optismistic boarding numbers is that the cruise line Seabourn's new 450-guest luxury Seabourn Quest began using the port on Monday.

Wildlife Official Questions Nelson's Rush to Ban Exotic Pythons

Florida wildlife officials are expressing concern about an effort by Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Orlando, to speed up a ban on importing and trading exotic pythons, as a growing number of the species are being dumped in South Florida.

Scott Hardin, exotic species coordinator at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, expressed concern that the ban could have the unintended consequences of causing more snakes to be released into the wild, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Scott Appoints Rick Knight to Hardee County Commission

Frederick Rick Knight has been named to the Hardee County Commission by Gov. Rick Scott.

Knight,who also serves as the mayor of Wauchula, will complete the term of Terry Atchley who resigned. The term ends Nov. 19, 2012.

Knight, who served on the Commission in the 1980s, is a real estate broker.

This past week, Scott also appointed Andrew D. Clark to the board of Funeral, Cemetery and Consumer Services.

Record Crowd Expected for Unmanned Launch at the Cape

Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, chair of Space Florida, will take a break from her Thanksgiving vacation to join a large holiday weekend crowd watching the latest mission to Mars that will belaunched from Cape Canaveral on Saturday.

The car-sized Mars Science Laboratory and Curiosity rover, aboard an unmanned Atlas 5, is set to launch at 10:02 a.m.

Mormonism a Problem for Mitt Romney in Primary, Not General Election

While Mitt Romneys Mormon faith could hurt him in the Republican presidential primary, it's unlikely to affect his support in the general election.

A new poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life finds that Romneys religion could hurt him with white evangelical Protestants an important voting bloc in the Republican primaries. Among the evangelical voters polled, more than half -- 53 percent -- said they don't think of Mormons as Christians. Asked for a single word to describe Mormonism, evangelicals are the most likely group to respond with the word cult.

On Wednesday, James Ammons, the president of Florida A&M University, announced that he had appointed a task force led by former Attorney General Bob Butterworth and Quincy Police Chief Walt McNeil to investigate the death of Robert Champion, a student who died in Orlando in Saturday after an alleged hazing incident involving the famous Marching 100 band.

Rick Scott Brings FDLE Into FAMU Suspected Hazing Investigation

The state government is now looking into the death of Robert Champion, a Florida A&M University student who was a drum major with the famous Marching 100 band, on Saturday in a suspect hazing incident in Orlando. While the bands activities have been suspended by the university as officials investigate, Gov. Rick Scott sent a letter to Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Commissioner Gerald Bailey to work with Orange County officials in ivestigating the matter.
