February 1, 2012 - 6:00pm

Republicans could go three-for-three this fall in a trio of newly drawn congressional districts in South Florida, but Democrats contend that their chances improved there under reapportionment.

The Florida Legislature kicked off a round of musical chairs when it created the sprawling 17th Congressional District to encompass portions of eight counties surrounding Lake Okeechobee.

February 1, 2012 - 6:00pm

With the Florida House Business and Consumer Affairs Subcommittee scheduled to vote on Friday on a bill to expand casino gambling in the Sunshine State, supporters and opponents of the measure scrambled on Thursday, making their last arguments and mobilizing their backers before the vote on Friday morning.

Brewster Bevis, vice president of external relations for the Associated Industries of Florida, pointed to figures set up in the state Capitol that represent residents of the Sunshine State who would be in better financial shape if destination casinos came to the state.

Women to Newt: Payback Time, Baby

If you're waiting for another Newt Gingrich comeback, don't hold your breath. Women have this one covered, and they're not -- repeat, not -- hot for the Newtster.

Women voters proved in Florida they don't want him. Period. Exit polls in Tuesday's GOP primary revealed a landslide victory among women for family man Mitt Romney over thrice-married Gingrich -- 52 percent to 28 percent. Obviously, when they got to the polls, women voters didn't forget his philandering. They don't admire it, they don't forgive it and they don't want it in their president.

With the pending expansion of the Panama Canal on the horizon, and an eye on a free Cuba, Port Manatee is bristling with opportunities as executives have created a special economic development zone on neighboring land that is hoped to double and even triple capacity in the coming decades.

Similar to enterprise zones that offer incentives to businesses, the port has crafted a 5,000-acre encouragement zone that has so far drawn interest from at least seven companies that would serve as port-related distribution centers.

Have You Noticed How Good the Economy Is Doing Lately?

It's almost a truism of liberal American journalism: Homelessness is only a crisis when a Republican is in the White House.

It's just as true that economic news automatically improves when a Democrat is running for re-election. Witness yesterday's USA Today (the only major newspaper readily available in this newspaper-starved capital city).

Lead story on the Business section: "'Jan. Barometer' predicts good year."
