Going to a backup defense in their ongoing tussle with the IRS, the Miccosukee Indians are blaming the tribe's former attorney for "faulty advice."
In court filings, tribal members admitted for the first time that they owe the federal government $25.8 million back taxes and penalties from their South Florida casino profits.
The admission surfaced in the Miccosukees' malpractice lawsuit against former counsel Dexter Lehtinen. Tribal members allege that Lehtinen advised them they owed no personal income tax on gambling proceeds.

Mitt Romney carried Michigan by 9 percent over John McCain in the 2008 Republican primary -- but a poll unveiled on Monday finds that Romney could lose the 2012 primary on Feb. 28 to Rick Santorum.
Santorum leads in Michigan, the state where Romneys father served as governor, according to a poll by American Research Group. The poll has Santorum out front with 33 percent followed by Romney with 27 percent, Newt Gingrich with 21 percent and Ron Paul with 12 percent. Six percent remain undecided and 1 percent back other candidates.

Gas prices have jumped nearly 20 cents a gallon across Florida as Europes debt crisis continues to be focused on Greece.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Florida stood at $3.63 as the week began, up from $3.45 a month earlier, according to AAA, which projects the increase to continue this week.
"As long as Europe battles their debt issues, we're going to see global oil demand diminish along with Europe's economic growth," Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman, stated in a release.

Niger Innis -- the son of Roy Innis, the president of the Congress of Racial Equality, and a spokesman for the group -- announced over the weekend that he is backing Joe Kaufman for the Republican nomination to take on U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in November. Wasserman Schultz is chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

Taking aim at a controversial piece of Florida's Medicaid overhaul, federal health officials this week rejected hitting beneficiaries with $10 monthly premiums and charges for some emergency-room visits.
The federal Medicaid agency, in a letter dated Thursday, notified the state that the proposals violated federal requirements that are designed, at least in part, to shield poor people from additional costs.
