Gus Bilirakis, Darrell Issa Reload on Eric Holder's 'Fast & Furious'

February 13, 2012 - 6:00pm

Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor, said Tuesday that congressional Republicans are turning up the heat on Attorney General Eric Holder and the Fast & Furious gun-walking debacle.

The Justice Department continues to deny access to thousands of documents and requests to interview attorneys that may have knowledge of the scandal. We have to keep up the pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder and keep digging into what exactly the Justice Department has to hide, Bilirakis told Sunshine State News.

NEW YORK -- James and Jeanne Harmon reside in and supposedly own a five-story brownstone on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a building that has been in their family since 1949.

Senate Republicans Break Ranks, Defeat Prison Privatization Proposal

February 13, 2012 - 6:00pm

Ten Republicans broke ranks Tuesday to help Democrats defeat the union-opposed plan to privatize correctional facilities in Central and South Florida.

The Senate voted 19-21 to defeat SB 2038, which would have allowed private companies to bid on running one or all-but-one of 26 correctional facilities as the state sought to save at least $16.5 million a year. The bill included a provision prohibiting any single company from having a monopoly over all of the facilities.

Political Consultant Doug Guetzloe Found Guilty on Fed Tax Charges

Central Florida political consultant Doug Guetzloe was found guilty Wednesday afternoon of failing to file tax returns -- in what the Orlando Sentinel calls "the latest setback" in his scrimmage with the Internal Revenue Service.

It took a 12-member jury only 30 minutes to find Guetzloe, one of the founders of the Florida TEA Party, guilty of two misdemeanor counts of wilful failure to file tax returns. He now faces up to two years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 21.

Republicans Line Up Against Alan Grayson in 'Latino Access' CD 9

February 13, 2012 - 6:00pm

Florida's new 9th Congressional District is designated for "Latino access," but so far, the majority of candidates seeking the Central Florida seat are non-Hispanic.

Former Rep. Alan Grayson appears to have the inside track to the Democratic nomination. Having represented more than a third of the current constituency of CD 9 -- until he was ousted by Daniel Webster in 2010 -- Grayson has the name recognition and the war chest to shut down primary competition and wage a general election campaign.

Martin County Sheriff Bobby Crowder to Challenge Allen West

RINO alert! Martin County Sheriff Bobby Crowder will challenge Rep. Allen West in the GOP primary in the 18th Congressional District.

Figuring to run to West's left, Crowder was among a group of sheriffs who endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink over Republican Rick Scott in 2010.

Crowder will face West in the newly drawn CD 18, encompassing Martin and St. Lucie counties and the northern portion of Palm Beach County.

Obviously, Jack Latvala Never Had His Identity Stolen

February 14, 2012 - 6:00pm

Seems odd to me why a Florida senator would want to continue a system that exposes thousands of Floridians to identity theft. But Jack Latvala is sticking to Florida's turkey of a law like a cheap suit in the rain.

Ground Control to Newt: That’s a Negative on Shiny New Moon Colony

Newt Gingrich's moon colony should be grounded, according to a new poll of GOP voters.

The Hill, a Washington, D.C.-based newspaper, is reporting that Newt Gingrichs moon colony has a long way to go before it meets with voters' approval. The Hill poll reveals 64 percent of Republicans disapprove of the United States building a permanent base on the moon. Only 21 percent of GOP voters favor the idea.

Continuing their distaste for all things Newt, women --most of all --scoffed at the idea, with only 14 percent approving of the colony.

Heritage: The Days of Horatio Alger Are Behind Us. Let's Get Them Back

February 13, 2012 - 6:00pm

Americans pride themselves on being a self-reliant people. We know that the freedom to make our own fortune sets us apart from the people of many other nations. Its what has drawn to our shores generations of immigrants -- men and women risking their lives to live a life in which they, not the government, are in charge.
