Lawmakers Looking at Endgame for 2012 Session

With different versions of the budget having cleared the House and Senate and two crucial court rulings looming, legislative leaders have begun gaming out the endgame for the 2012 session.

Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, suggested Monday the end of the session could hinge on three factors:

Bizarre Verdicts Could Fuel Rep. Larry Metz's Anti-Sharia Bill

Florida's "anti-Sharia" legislation received some added impetus last week when a Pennsylvania court bowed to Islamic sensibilities and acquitted a Muslim defendant of assault.

Magistrate Judge Mark Martin recited religious and cultural customs to dismiss a harassment case against a Muslim man who assaulted an atheist activist at a Halloween parade.

The victim, Ernest Perce, wore a Zombie Mohammed costume and pretended to walk among the dead.

Allen West Slaps Obama, Awaits Apology from Afghan President

In a Facebook posting Monday, U.S. Rep. Allen West said he's waiting for an apology from Afghanistan President Karzai in the aftermath of a Quran-burning episode.

West wrote:

"I want to extend my sincere condolences to the families of the Army colonel and major who were killed by Afghanistan security forces over this 'burning Quran' episode.

Mitt Romney Can't Help It If His Friends Are Rich, Too

You know what Mitt Romney's biggest problem is?

He just can't help the fact that he's Mitt Romney.

Forget how much he likes to fire people. Forget that he doesn't care for the "very poor." Forget even that he's so supportive of the American auto industry that he owns four cars -- two of them Cadillacs.

This is just priceless. On a Sunday trip to Daytona before the race, Romney was asked whether he was a big follower of NASCAR (hopefully soon to be Florida's official state sport, by the way.)

Jeff Atwater Praises Bill to End Release of Social Security Numbers

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater released the following statement regarding the Senate Rules Committee approving on Monday Senate Bill 1208, which will end the state's practice of releasing Social Security numbers -- from CFO Atwaters Bureau of Unclaimed Property -- for the purpose of locating owners of abandoned or unclaimed property. Two More Republicans Announce Challenges to Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Two more Republicans have jumped in to challenge Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fort Lauderdale, and Broward County's GOP chairman says a "spirited primary" will help the party "put our best foot forward."

Gineen Bresso and Juan Eliel Garcia joined the Republican contest in the 23rd Congressional District, bringing the number of GOP hopefuls there to six.

Previously announced candidates, as reported by Sunshine State News, are Karen Harrington, Joe Goldner, Joe Kaufman and Ozzie DeFaria.

PETA, Pet Deaths and O.J. Simpson's House

A story published in The Daily Caller shows that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an organization known for its uncompromising animal-rights positions, killed more than 95 percent of the pets in its care in 2011.

Budget Conference Talks Will be Held in Public, Haridopolos Says

Senate President Mike Haridopolos says upcoming budget conference sessions will be fully available to the public.

Everything that is in conference as we position ourselves with our conforming bills and otherwise will be open and transparent in the next two weeks, the Merritt Island Republican told reporters Monday. I know were going to continue that tradition we followed last year.

Poll Shows Close Battle Between Romney and Santorum in Michigan

Another poll shows its a close battle between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in the Michigan Republican presidential primary.

Rasmussen Reports released a poll of likely primary voters which finds Romney beating Santorum by a small margin -- within the margin of error. Romney takes 38 percent followed by Santorum with 36 percent. Ron Paul is in distant third with 11 percent, just ahead of Newt Gingrich, who takes 10 percent. Five percent are undecided and 1 percent back other candidates.
