PETA, Pet Deaths and O.J. Simpson's House

A story published in The Daily Caller shows that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an organization known for its uncompromising animal-rights positions, killed more than 95 percent of the pets in its care in 2011.

It's a story told with documents obtained from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and published online by the Center for Consumer Freedom, a nonprofit organization that runs online campaigns targeting groups that antagonize food producers.

Fifteen years worth of similar records show that since 1998 PETA has killed more than 27,000 animals at its headquarters in Norfolk, Va. In fact, in a Feb. 16 statement, the Center said PETA killed 1,911 cats and dogs last year, finding homes for only 24 pets.

Meanwhile, PETA is trying to get JP Morgan Chase Bank to donate O.J. Simpson's $720,000 Miami home -- in foreclosure in Miami-Dade County Court -- to its cause for use as a "Meat is Murder" museum. "This museum would encourage visitors to choose nonviolent vegan meals over those that cost millions of cows, pigs, fish, chickens, and other animals their lives," said a PETA spokeswoman.

The animal rights group hopes to play on Simpson's history, whether rumor or real. PETA claims that the murder of his wife and waiter Ron Goldman, as well as his current incarceration for a Las Vegas robbery, are a part of what would draw attention to the museum. PETA also says that Simpson's ownership of chicken restaurants and HoneyBaked Ham stores was part of their motive for acquiring the home.

The PETA spokeswoman did not comment on the news about the organization's grim record of failing to save pets in its care.
