Rick Scott: USF-Poly Split May be a Chance to Reinvent State Education


The decision to split the University of South Florida-Polytechnic campus in Lakeland into an independent university comes down to a chance to reinvent the state university system versus costs, Gov. Rick Scott said Wednesday.

Scott said Wednesday morning he was still weighing the impact of allowing the University of South Florida-Polytechnic campus in Lakeland to become independent this summer.

Rick Scott to Meet with Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board

Gov. Rick Scott is scheduled to be in Central Florida today for a second day ofceremonial signing of the state budget. He will also sit down with the Orlando Sentinel editorial board.

The hour-long editorial board meeting is on his schedule for 9:30 a.m.

The budget ceremonies will be held at noon at Tangelo Park Elementary in Orlando and 2:45 p.m. at Sam Rampello Downtown Partnership K-8 School in Tampa.

A Florida law that bars candidates from switching parties in the year before an election could face a court challenge on the grounds that it amounts to a lifelong ban.

Fred O'Neal, founder of the Florida TEA Party, cited Section 99.021(1)(b) of the law, which says a candidate must attest that he "has not been a registered member of any other political party for 365 days before the beginning of qualifying preceding the general election for which the person seeks to qualify."

TaxWatch 'Turkeys' Account for 61 percent of Budget Vetoes

Among the $142.7 million that Gov. Rick Scott vetoed from the state budget for the next fiscal year, was $63.1 million that had been identified by the budget watchdog group Florida TaxWatch as fiscal "turkeys."

Conservatives Make Case for Jeff Atwater Senate Bid

Amid ongoing anxiety about the Republican field for U.S. Senate, Jeff Atwater is drawing interest and enthusiasm from conservative activists across Florida.

The state's chief financial officer told the political website Shark Tank that he is considering a run for the seat currently occupied by Democrat Bill Nelson.

That news set off a boomlet for Atwater in GOP circles.

Backers of individual items in Floridas budget did a better job this year of demonstratinghow their projects could economically help the state.

Gov. Rick Scott signed a budget Tuesday that increases education spending by $1 billion from last year, while slashing $142.7 million from individual legislators projects, less than a quarter of the total he axed a year ago.

Scott said lawmakers were able to explain the economic returns on their projects this year.
