Absentee Ballots for Aug. 14 Primary Begin Going Out

Florida voters should get a good idea of which candidates have well-tuned advisers this week.

The first bulk mailing of absentee or vote-by-mail ballots for the Aug. 14 primary and local nonpartisan elections is being sent out by Floridas 67 county supervisors of elections for the first contest since the state Legislature redrew U.S. House and legislative boundary lines.

Doc Renuart Has Financial Edge in Last Weeks of First Coast GOP House Primary

The money is flowing into the First Coast where Rep. Ronald Doc Renuart, R-Ponte Vedra, faces two challengers in the Republican primary as he seeks a third term in the Florida House.

First elected in 2008, Renuart, a physician who has risen to become vice chairman of the Health and Human Services Quality Subcommittee, currently represents parts of Duval and St. Johns counties, but he is currently running in House District 17 which contains much of the same area but stretches to the south.

Rick Scott Orders Flags Lowered for Steven P. Stevens II

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered state and national flags lowered to half-staff at the Tallahassee City Hall, Leon County Courthouse and Floridas Capitol on Friday, July 13, for Private First Class Steven P. Stevens II.

Stevens II, 23, of Tallahassee, died on June 22 while conducting operations in the Helmand province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Jennifer Carroll to CNN: Mitt Romney Genuine, Made Case to NAACP Well

In a prime national television segment this morning, Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll told CNN's Solidad O'Brien that she is proud of Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Speaking before the NAACP convention in Houston on Wednesday, Romney withstood the delegates' boos gracefully, she said, spoke from the heart, and made his case "about as well as it was possible to."

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is among a handful of state attorneys general trying to determine if they have jurisdiction over banks found manipulating lending benchmarks following British-based Barclays settlement with both U.S. and U.K. authorities, according to Reuters.

Florida OFR Claims Companies Failed to Fully Inform Investors of Fees

The attorney general and the Florida Office of Financial Regulation have filed a lawsuit against Florida-based Prime Capital Services Inc., and Poughkeepsie, New York-based Asset & Financial Planning Ltd., seeking restitution for not fully informing investors of their management fees.

The paperwork, filed in the circuit court for Sarasota County, declares that Prime Capital and AFP failed to fully inform investors that management fees had been withdrawn from variable annuities, which negatively impacted benefit riders.

Ex-Employee Says Jennifer Carroll, Aide Caught in 'Compromising Position'

As part of her defense in a criminal trial, a former aide to Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll said she caught the lieutenant governor in "a compromising position" with another aide shortly before being fired last year.

The allegations are part of the ongoing prosecution of Carletha Cole, a former aide to Carroll who shared a recording of a conversation with Carroll's chief of staff with a reporter for the Florida Times-Union after she was fired.

Cole has been charged with disclosing that recorded conversation.
