Bill Nelson: Fiscal Cliff Bill 'Something We Had To Do'

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Orlando, released a statement Wednesday on Senate Bill 8, the fiscal cliff deal.

It was something we had to do to keep the country from going over the fiscal cliff and to prevent income taxes from going up for more than 95 percent of folks. Now weve got to finish the job of fixing our countrys financial ills with more targeted spending cuts and reforming our tax code.

Pam Bondi Recognizes January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Florida Offers Deer, Hog, Turkey Hunts to Wounded Veterans

The state has created a website that lists seven opportunities for wounded veterans to hunt -- for deer, hog or turkey -- on state lands between Jan. 11 and April 18.

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam announced Wednesday the hunting opportunities as part of the Florida Forest Services Operation Outdoor Freedom program.

Change Coming for Florida Lottery’s Pink Flamingo

The Florida lottery will unveil a new logo on Jan. 7 at its Tallahassee headquarters to mark its quarter century mark.

The release from the lottery doesnt say what will become of the iconic pink flamingo.

Over the past 25 years, the Florida lottery has become an integral part of Floridas culture and landscape with its iconic logo and its funding for education," a release from the Florida lottery stated.

Ex Rep. Snyder to be Sworn in as Martin County Sheriff

Former Florida Rep. William Snyder will return to the Martin County sheriffs office as he is sworn in as Martin County sheriff on Jan. 8 in Stuart, a release from Snyder's campaign stated on Wednesday.

A Republican from Stuart, Snyder spent six years in the Legislature after 33 years in law enforcement, starting in Miami-Dade County and from 1993 to 2006 with Martin County, where he was major, director of law enforcement.

Snyder will be just the third sheriff for Martin County since 1972.

Rick Scott Office Hours in Wauchula, Lunch With Bill Galvano

Floridas government is slowly getting back to work with the new year.

Gov. Rick Scott will meet with members of the public in Hardee County at the Historic City Hall in Wauchula this afternoon starting at 1 p.m.

He is attending a business round-table at the Desoto County Chamber of Commerce this morning in Arcadia and has an hourlong lunch meeting with Sen. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, at the Pioneer Restaurant in Zolfo Springs.

Flawed Senate Effort to Postpone Fiscal Cliff Approved in House

January 1, 2013 - 6:00pm

Five Florida Republicans were among the 85 House GOP members who sided with Democrats on Tuesday to approve Senate Bill 8, which averts, for now, $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts commonly called the fiscal cliff.

Voting in support, U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, wrote that the bill has its flaws but that he supported the permanent cuts offered.
