Two governors, two viewpoints, one disappointing job covering the story of the day.

The founding generation of the once-classy Capital Tiger Bay Club in Tallahassee must have been spinning in their graves Wednesday, hearing Steve Birtman warm up the crowd for luncheon speaker Steve Southerland.

As long as I've known Joe Negron, I've never seen him show as much emotion as he did Thursday listening to citizens -- many of them his neighbors -- pouring out their hearts, one after another, about the plight of the toxic, black St. Lucie estuary and Indian River Lagoon.

How is it Bill Nelson comes to Martin County with empty pockets and empty promises and gets a hero's welcome, but Gov. Rick Scott flies in with $40 million to help solve the polluted St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon (added to the $20 million from last year) and he virtually gets mooned by the local press?

Martin County leaders have a choice. They can continue pointing fingers at agriculture to the south of Lake Okeechobee for the toxic state of the St. Lucie estuary and Indian River Lagoon. Or they can look in the mirror -- and fix the part of the problem that lies squarely at their feet.

Richard Grosso, the environmental attorney ordered by the 1st District Court of Appeal to repay court costs because he filed a frivolous appeal, may not have to pay back the taxpayers of Martin County after all.
