Florida Was Off Center Stage in American Revolution Despite Some Important Events

As the nation celebrates the 239th anniversary of independence this Fourth of July weekend, Floridians can look back at the strange and almost entirely forgotten role their state played in the American Revolution.

A Spanish colony for almost 200 years, the English gained Florida at the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which ended the Seven Years War. People in the U.S. call it the French and Indian War.

Attorney Jonathan Chane Joins the Democratic Field Running to Replace Patrick Murphy in Congress

On Thursday, attorney Jonathan Chane joined the Democratic field running in the crowded race to replace U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., in Congress. Murphy is running for the U.S. Senate in 2016. 

“I'm running for Congress and excited to represent Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast in D.C.,” Chane posted on Twitter on Thursday. “Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast deserve a voice in Congress that'll put us first. I know what it takes to make a difference.”

Florida has always been something of an afterthought in the American Revolution. Despite American efforts in the early stages of the war, the two colonies of East Florida and West Florida remained in British hands, though the Spanish broke through in Pensacola in 1781. Few of the Founding Fathers got involved with Florida though three South Carolinians who had signed the Declaration of Independence -- Arthur Middleton, Edward Rutledge and Thomas Heyward -- would be imprisoned in St. Augustine after the fall of Charleston.

Businessman Randy Fine has decided to forgo running for the U.S. Senate in 2016 to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and has his eyes firmly on Tallahassee. 

Fine, a gaming consultant, told Politico in an article published on Wednesday night that he will not run for the Senate but will instead continue his bid for the Florida House seat currently held by term-limited Rep. John Tobia, R-Melbourne Beach.

Wilcox announced last month that he would leave Patriot Capital to focus on an exploratory effort for the Senate seat currently held by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is running for the Republican presidential nomination and has said he will not run for a second Senate term. 

Obama, Cuba Ready to Open Embassies as Normalization Continues

President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday the full normalization of relations with Cuba including opening an embassy in Havana on July 20. "This is a historic step forward in our efforts to normalize relations with the Cuban government and people and begin a new chapter with our neighbors in the Americas,” Obama said.
