A Florida congressman launched a bill this week to pull the plug on congressional pensions.

Even with Republicans controlling both wings of Capitol Hill and President-elect Donald Trump ready to move into the White House, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., had a busy first week in his latest term. Hastings was first elected to Congress in 1992. 

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., continued to focus on Israel in his first days of his second term in the Senate as he teamed up with U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Mary., on Wednesday. 

Now starting his second term in Congress, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., was named to the powerful U.S. House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday. The Ways and Means Committee is one of the most important bodies in the House, overseeing tax policy. 

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., who has garnered buzz as a potential challenger to U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., in 2018, started his fifth term in the U.S. House this week taking aim at outgoing President Barack Obama. 

With the 115th Congress convening on Tuesday, two Florida Republicans spent the first day of the new session focusing on Israel. 

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., teamed up with former presidential primary rival U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., to bring out the “Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act" which would move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his support for moving the embassy to Jerusalem. ‎

Following through on their announcement last month, U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., teamed up with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to introduce a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution imposing congressional term limits. 

On the first day of his second term, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., announced his committee assignments, including a seat on the Appropriations Committee. 

With the new Congress convening on Tuesday,  U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., introduced several proposals ranging from tax reform to national security to fighting citrus greening. 

While the clock is ticking until President Barack Obama leaves the White House, U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., is taking aim at him with a resolution “disapproving of President Obama and his administration’s refusal to veto the anti-Israel resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council.”
