Congressional Democrats Are Maxing Out Their Office Budgets, Too

April 8, 2012 - 6:00pm

When it comes to spending, no one does it like congressional Democrats.

And that includes their outlays at the office.

A survey of all 435 House members found that the 21 who expended the biggest percentage of their office budgets were all Democrats.

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., went so far as to dive into the red. The 13-term civil-rights veteran racked up $1,482,469 in office expenses last year -- $8.563 more than he budgeted.

Ron DeSantis: Lighting a Fire Under Congress From CD 6

April 5, 2012 - 6:00pm

Another in a series of profiles of candidates in Florida's 6th Congressional District.

Campaigning for the GOP nomination in Florida's 6th Congressional District, Ron DeSantis wants to take conservatism to a new level.

"Don't make government work like a business ... it's inherently inefficient. You need to be intent on reducing size, scope and influence of government," he says.

While that's not exactly a line one would expect from a Yale and Harvard Law graduate, the 33-year-old DeSantis isn't a conventional congressional candidate either.

'Voter Suppression' Claims Not Adding Up in Florida, Review Shows

April 4, 2012 - 6:00pm

Claims that Florida is one of the "five worst states for voter suppression" are not borne out by rising registration statistics, a Sunshine State News analysis shows.

The liberal Center for American Progress charged that Florida election laws are subverting voter-registration efforts. A new law, requiring third-party registration groups to submit completed forms within 48 hours or face fines, prompted the League of Women Voters to halt its sign-up work in the state and to challenge the law in court.

Craig Miller: Banking on Experience, Volusia in CD 6

April 3, 2012 - 6:00pm

Second in a series of profiles of candidates in the 6th Congressional District, which runs along the northern east coast of Florida.

Craig Miller likes his position in the geopolitics of the new 6th Congressional District.

The first Republican to officially enter the race, Miller has an established residence in Winter Park, outside CD 6. But the former restaurant-industry executive has long maintained a home in the Volusia County town of New Smyrna Beach and has extensive business connections in the district.

CD 19 Candidate Questions 'Creepy' Purchase of His Domain Names

April 3, 2012 - 6:00pm

A Republican congressional candidate in Southwest Florida is questioning what he calls an opponent's "creepy" purchase of personal Internet domain names.

"It's a little stalker-ish," Chauncey Goss said of the "Friends of Trey Radel," who bought the rights to chaunceygoss.com, chaunceygoss.net and chaunceygoss.org.

Adding to the intrigue, the site names were obtained in March and April of 2011 -- 11 months before Radel announced his candidacy for the 19th Congressional District.

Department of Revenue Worker Charged with Loan Sharking

April 2, 2012 - 6:00pm

A state Department of Revenue tax specialist has been arrested and charged with eight counts of loan sharking, reportedly using his office computer to track the transactions.

Dorian Harper is accused of assessing interest rates of more than 25 percent on loans made between Jan. 1, 2009, and Oct. 7, 2011. He was also charged with one count of making loans without a license, law-enforcement documents show.

Booked into Leon County Jail on March 27, Harper posted a $4,500 bond the next day.

Department of Revenue spokeswoman Renee Watters said in a statement:

Offering $1,000 Reward, Group Battles School Board over Muslim Outreach

April 1, 2012 - 6:00pm

The Hillsborough County School Board isn't backing down in the face of an ongoing campaign to halt Muslim speakers from appearing at local campuses.

At least not yet.

A 2 1/2-hour board workshop on Friday concluded with a general sense that current district policies are adequate.

But the Florida Family Association wants school officials to slam the door on the Council on American-Islamic Relations, whose local director has addressed classes at Steinbrenner High School.

Fred Costello: GOP 'Free Agent' Seeks CD 6 Seat

April 1, 2012 - 6:00pm

First in a series of profiles of candidates running in the 6th Congressional District, which runs along the northern east coast of Florida.

Fred Costello isn't a "machine" Republican -- and he has the record to prove it.

The state representative from Ormond Beach was the only GOP member of the House to oppose the controversial Medicaid bill, HB 5301, that passed this session.

He introduced six bills, none of which passed the 2012 Legislature.

East Coast Passenger Train Venture Waiting on Amtrak

March 29, 2012 - 6:00pm

Pushing to get an east-coast rail line back on track, proponents say their venture would complement plans for privately operated high-speed passenger service between Miami and Orlando.

Meeting in Daytona Beach on Friday, about 75 municipal representatives heard officials from the Florida Department of Transportation and Amtrak discuss resurrecting a coastal run between Jacksonville and Miami.

Little 'Tweak,' Big Chill: How Feds Isolate Free Speech

March 29, 2012 - 6:00pm

A bipartisan "tweak" in a citizen-protest law is eliciting squawks from activists on the right and the left who call it one more way for politicians to distance themselves from the public.
