December 5, 2011 - 6:00pm

Knocking down a rumor that she will run for Congress next year, state Sen. Paula Dockery says she has no future aspirations to serve in a legislative branch.

But in an interview with Sunshine State News, she didn't rule out another campaign for governor.

Term-limited in 2012, the Lakeland Republican was a Florida House member for six years and will conclude a decade in the state Senate next year.

Herman Cain Suspends Campaign; Cites 'Continued Distractions'

December 2, 2011 - 6:00pm

The Herman Cain train that started rolling with a stunning victory at Florida's Presidency 5 straw poll was derailed within two months by a string of sex-charged allegations and an uncomfortable videotaped flub over Libya.

Speaking Saturday in Atlanta, the one-time GOP front-runner announced that was suspending his campaign.

"As false accusations about me continue, they have sidetracked and distracted my ability to present solutions to the American people," Cain told a modest gathering outside his campaign headquarters.

More Americans Left Labor Pool Than Found Jobs in November

December 1, 2011 - 6:00pm

Are you feeling it? The Obama administration claimed Friday that a 0.4-point drop in the unemployment rate to 8.6 percent "provides further evidence that the economy is continuing to heal."

But the November jobs report revealed a discouraged and shrinking U.S. work force, while spurring suspicions of statistical manipulation by the government.

Long 'Hurricane Tail' Whips Up Florida Insurance Rates

December 1, 2011 - 6:00pm

Florida hasn't been hit by a hurricane in six years, but a long "hurricane tail" continues to lash the insurance industry, a new report shows.

The 2011 storm season, which ended Nov. 30, continued the longest stretch without a hurricane in Florida since the nine-year gap between Opal (1995) and Charley (2004).

The last hurricane to hit the Sunshine State was Wilma, which first struck the southwest peninsula as a Category 3 storm in October 2005.

So why arent property insurance rates dying down like the winds?

November 30, 2011 - 6:00pm

Florida supporters of Herman Cain are standing by as they anxiously await his campaign "reassessment."

The businessman said he would counsel with his family in Georgia this weekend and announce his future plans at a yet-to-be-determined time.

Multiple allegations of misconduct and a painful stumble over an editorial board question about Libya have rocked the campaign and raised questions about the candidate's viability -- personally and politically.

Minority Rule: 'Fair Districts' Don't Help Democrats ... Much

November 29, 2011 - 6:00pm

By protecting minority districts, proposed new congressional maps for Florida help Republicans maintain their hold on the state's U.S. House delegation, even as Democrats have an edge in party registration.

It wasn't what Democratic supporters of the 2010 Fair Districts amendments envisioned, but redistricting has pivoted primarily on the legal requirement that preserves House seats held by minorities.

Barack Obama's Hispanic Support Erodes, Cutting His Edge in Florida

November 27, 2011 - 6:00pm

Amid angst over illegal immigration, President Barack Obama is losing support among Hispanic voters, complicating his re-election chances in Florida, a new Quinnipiac Poll shows.

Obama carried the Sunshine State in 2008 with the help of Hispanics, but that support is softening here and elsewhere.

A national Quinnipiac poll conducted Nov. 14-20 shows the president's approval/disapproval rating among Hispanics has dropped to 56-43. Obama won 67 percent of the U.S. Latino vote in 2008.
