June 18, 2012 - 6:00pm

Expect a bill that shelters private property in Florida from takeover by a United Nations-led world government effort, Senate President-designate Don Gaetz said Tuesday.

And expect that bill to receive favorable support.

Appearing on Fort Walton radio station WFTW 1260 AM, Gaetz said he expected Florida lawmakers to introduce and approve a bill similar to Senate Bill 477 that has been approved by the Alabama Legislature.

I think there is a very good chance that bill will come up, Gaetz said.

June 17, 2012 - 6:00pm

The majority of Floridas university students still face a maximum increase in tuition this fall.

Despite prognostications that a vote by the board of trustees from the University of Florida to lower its tuition would cause their counterparts to follow suit, the state board of governors is getting mostly 15 percent tuition rate increase requests from other state universities.

The Board of Governors is scheduled to decideon the individual hike requests Thursday afternoon.

Ethics Commissioners Seek Bigger Fines, Greater Enforcement

June 14, 2012 - 6:00pm

Seeking more teeth to enforce its fines, the Florida Commission on Ethics wants state legislators to make things a little harder and potentially more expensive on themselves and other elected officials.

But they are starting an investigation on their own, instead of waiting for a citizen to file a complaint, so it will remain a secondary issue.

The commission, admitting it hasn't had the most success in past legislative sessions, will continue to seek more power to enforce its fine and boost how much it can fine politicians.

Florida GOP: Obama's Deferred Deportations Harm Real Immigration Reform

June 14, 2012 - 6:00pm

A decision by the Obama administration that it would no longer seek the deportation of most young illegal immigrants has set off the expected signs of support from his party members in Florida.

Meanwhile, Republicans from the Sunshine State are equally outraged that Obama, who they have long decried as soft on immigration, would again implement an executive order without congressional approval.

Rick Scott's Welcome Message Can Fly at Tampa International

June 14, 2012 - 6:00pm

The governor can make his proposed recording to welcome and ask people to come back to Tampa International Airport without fear of crossing state ethics rules.

A recorded greeting from the governor for shuttle bus riders at Tampa International Airport is a political gift, but not prohibited because the value doesnt exceed the $100 threshold that must be reported, the counsel for the state ethics commission ruled Friday.

Rick 'Lazarus' Scott Once Rose From the Grave, Voted Provisionally -- and It Counted

June 13, 2012 - 6:00pm

The use of a provisional ballot shouldnt be considered a means to deny a voter a chance to cast a ballot, Gov. Rick Scott said Thursday.

Nor, he said, should the voting method be used as a negative in the state-federal fight over Floridas efforts to identify and remove non-U.S. citizens from the list of voters.

Scott says he knows all about provisional ballots because he had to fill one out in the past. Why? Because once when he went to a voting precinct in Collier County, a poll worker informed him he was dead -- officially, anyway.

Florida Disputes Judge Jackie Fulford’s ‘Meat-Cleaver’ Pension Ruling

June 11, 2012 - 6:00pm

Leon County Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford incorrectly interpreted the state Constitution when striking down the law requiring that state workers contribute to their taxpayer-funded pension, contend attorneys for Gov. Rick Scott.

Former Justice Raoul Cantero, representing the state, wrote in the 44-page brief for the Florida Supreme Court that legislative appropriations supersede collective bargaining or that the state plan shouldnt be considered a taking -- as Fulford ruled on March 6 -- because individuals' benefits remain untouched.
