You probably can't imagine how much fun I've had at Sunshine State News over the last 10 years. I don't think anybody could.

Back in June, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniel, whom many think would be an attractive 2012 presidential candidate, was quoted by Andrew Ferguson in The Weekly Standard as saying the next president "would have to call a truce on the so-called social issues."
WASHINGTON -- Cowlitz County in Washington state is across the Columbia River from Portland, Ore., which promotes mass transit and urban density and is a green reproach to the rest of us. Recently, Cowlitz did something that might make Portland wonder whether shrinking its carbon footprint matters. Cowlitz approved construction of a coal export terminal from which millions of tons of U.S. coal could be shipped to Asia annually.
Economists are the real "party of No." They keep saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch -- and politicians keep on getting elected by promising free lunches.
The congressional lame-duck session finally ended Christmas week for both the Senate and the House. The 112th Congress will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

The State Board of Education will meet in Tampa on Tuesday to discuss the transition to Common Core, an education initiative focusing on mathematics and English Language Arts. There are five key components to the English Language Arts portion of the Common Core initiative: reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and media and technology. The two main components of the mathematical portion of the Common Core initiative are mathematical practice and mathematical standards.
Florida will be implementing the Common Core standards beginning in the 2014 school year.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are riding high in the Lone Star State as they look to 2016.
Cruz leads a University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll released on Monday looking at the possible Republican presidential field in 2016. Cruz takes 25 percent of Texas Republicans followed by U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in second with 13 percent and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in third with 11 percent.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., continued to make the rounds this weekend in support of his immigration reform bill. Rubio appeared on ABCs This Week on Sunday and insisted increasing border security would help rally conservatives behind the proposal. Rubio also claimed adding more border security was the only way the bill would pass both chambers of Congress.

According to a new Rasmussen Reports poll, more than half of Americans are not confident they'll receive Social Security benefits within their lifetime.
There's also a huge generation gap between those who believe they'll receive Social Security benefits in their lifetime and those who believe they won't. Seniors are overwhelmingly sure they'll be able to reap the benefits of Social Security, with nearly 70 percent saying they're very confident or somewhat confident they will receive all the Social Security benefits promised to them in their lifetime.
