Lawmakers, Lobbyists Join DeSantis on Israel Trip

Gov. Ron DeSantis will lead a contingent of more than 100 people, from elected officials and educators to lobbyists and religious leaders, on a weeklong trip to Israel that will include a state Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem where a bill targeting anti-Semitism will be signed.

DeSantis’ office Wednesday released a list of the people who will take part in the trip that starts Saturday, though the head count does not include security personnel. Also, the information did not provide a cost breakdown for taxpayers.

DeSantis' Top Priority: Security Review for All 67 Florida Elections Offices

Describing it as a “top priority,” Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday directed Secretary of State Laurel Lee to immediately start a review of the security of state and county elections systems after disclosures about Russian hacking during the 2016 campaign.

In a one-page letter to Lee, the state’s top elections official, DeSantis indicated the review will focus on cybersecurity and involve all 67 counties.

Mike Waltz Backs Congressional Term Limits Amendment

This week, freshman U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., announced his support for a proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution to have congressional term limits. 

Waltz is backing a resolution from U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Tex., to limit time on Capitol Hill to 12 years, with members of the U.S. House restricted to six terms and members of the U.S. Senate to two terms.

After cosponsoring the resolution at the start of the week, Waltz explained his support for the resolution on Wednesday. 

Bert Harris, Florida's Private Property Rights Icon, Has Died

Florida has lost the iconic lawmaker whose name is synonymous with private property rights and with the legislation that, for the last 27 years, has served as a model for other states addressing environmental and land use regulation.

Bert J. Harris, Jr. died Sunday at home with family, a hero in many legal circles and particularly in his Highlands County community -- a citrus farmer and rancher still fighting till the end on behalf of Florida agriculture.

The Florida Channel, the state-funded public affairs network, intends to have a crew in Israel as Gov. Ron DeSantis and state Cabinet members meet overseas.

But many details of the upcoming excursion of about 80 people, headed by DeSantis, remain unclear or under wraps. That includes whether Floridians will be able to watch live their elected officials hold a public meeting more than 6,000 miles from Tallahassee.

Florida lawmakers this month approved a controversial bill that is expected to make it harder to put citizens’ initiatives on the ballot.

The bill (HB 5) would place additional restrictions on gathering the hundreds of thousands of petition signatures needed to reach the ballot. For 2020 ballot proposals, supporters need to submit 76,632 valid signatures to trigger a review by the Florida Supreme Court. If justices sign off on the proposed ballot wording, supporters then would need to submit 766,200 signatures for the measures to go before voters.
