Sparing Emergency Care Providers

A bill that could spare emergency room doctors and other emergency medical care providers from healthcare lawsuits passed the Senate Health Regulation Committee in quick order Thursday.

Senate Bill 1474, sponsored by Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, Chair of the Republican Party of Florida, passed 5-2.

Business Income Tax Break

The Senate Commerce Committee passed the Corporate Income Tax Rate Reduction bill today. The bill would secure a one-percent reduction in the corporate income tax rate, from 5.5 percent to 4.5 percent on the first $1 million of corporate taxable income.

Gov. Charlie Crist, who proposed the tax break, released a statement saying he was grateful to Sen. Rudy Garcia, R-Hialeah, and the Commerce Committee, which he serves as chairman, for working quickly to give corporations a bit of a break.

Talks with S. Korea Proceed

The South Korean government proposed a deal to Florida Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp Wednesday that could launch Florida and Space Coast aerospace technicians into the high-speed rail industry .

Soon-Man Hong, South Koreas deputy minister for Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs, told Kottkamp and others that his country was interested in a partnership that could put aerospace experts to work in high-speed rail research and development, resulting in a transfer of Korean high-speed rail technology to Florida.

Republicans Talk Budget

Floridas House Republicans caucused Wednesday night and expressed concern about the budget and how the budget process will shape the entire session.
