Beating the field with registered Republicans, definite caucus voters and supporters of the tea party movement, Gingrich leads the new American Research Group poll of likely Republican caucus voters with 22 percent.

Carolyn Timmann, director of open government in the executive office of Gov. Rick Scott, confirmed Monday that she will resign her $90,000-a-year post effective the first of the new year.

"I want to run for clerk of the circuit court back home in Martin County," Timmann said. "It's the job I've always wanted and it seems to me all of my training has been leading me to that seat."

Barrel Racing Issue Before Appeal Court

Combatants in a battle over a new North Florida barrel racing venture brought their respective cases to the 1st District Court of Appeal on Monday with track owners saying they've gotten the state's blessing and their opponent crying foul.

At issue is whether the appellate court should issue a stay that would at least temporarily halt gambling at a new facility in Gretna while the issue of whether it is legal winds through the courts. The Gretna track, which received its permit in September, began holding barrel races on Dec 1.

Las Vegas Sands, which has been keeping a close eye on Floridas gambling debate, has objected to comments Attorney General Pam Bondi made Thursday when she went public with her opposition to "destination gaming" bills in the state House and Senate.

Bondi, joined by Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and backers siding with the No Casino effort, called on state legislators to walk away from the proposal they say will grow crime and lead to a proliferation of gambling across Florida.
