Citizens Proposes $1.5 Billion, 7 Percent Cut to Storm Risk Exposure

Floridas supposed insurer of last resort has moved to shave 7 percent of its risk, including $1 billion in coverage from properties that overlook the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, as a means to truly regain that moniker.

The Citizens Property Insurance board of governors on Wednesday supported a series of measures -- both in-house and through legislative action -- to revamp the state-backed provider, with a goal of reducing the number of overall policies from 1.5 million to 800,000.

Appeals Court Declines to Stop Barrel Racing in Gretna

Barrel racing and card playing will continue in Gretna while opponents try to shut the track down in court, an appeals court ruled Tuesday, rejecting a request to close the doors immediately while the underlying challenge moves forward.

A day after hearing arguments, a three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal denied a request by a group led by the Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association and the American Quarter Horse Association to shut down the newly opened track that has been offering pari-mutuel wagering and card games since Dec 1.

A fixed $2,000-per-person federal tax credit would enable households to purchase health coverage through the workplace or on the open market.

Providing additional subsidies to households with incomes of less than $44,700, the Heritage Foundation proposal limits costs by phasing out credits for upper-income earners.

Port of Fernandina Looking Inland

A critical letter from Las Vegas Sands isnt going to deter Attorney General Pam Bondi from her stance in opposition to the expansion of gaming in Florida.

Bondi joined the anti-gaming effort with Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, working under the No Casinos umbrella, on Dec. 8 to publicly express her opposition to the gaming bill now before legislators that would allow three mega-casinos in the state.
