USF Funding Feud Could Be Headed to Senate Floor Showdown

The Senate may be headed toward another floor showdown, this time over funding cuts for the University of South Florida.

USF President Judy Genshaft and Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, emerged from a face-to-face talk Monday saying they still had more work to do over the budget committee chairmans proposal to cut approximately $78 million for the school he hopes to split in two.

Cliff Stearns Faces Four-Way GOP Primary in Redrawn Congressional District

Drawn out of his current district, U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns still figures to have an advantage in his re-election run this year.

Just don't tell that to fellow Republicans trying to knock him out in the party primary.

With 12 terms in office and $2.38 million in the bank, the veteran GOP congressman has the power of incumbency and money behind him.

And though his Ocala home is now south and east of the newly designed 3rd Congressional District, nearly 70 percent of his old district remains within the new CD 3.

FPL Urges PSC for New Natural-Gas Plant in Port Everglades

State regulators Monday heard arguments about whether Florida Power & Light should build a nearly $1.2 billion power plant that the company says will limit air pollution and help meet electricity needs in South Florida.

The plant would replace a 1960s-era facility at Port Everglades in Broward County and start generating electricity in 2016. The Florida Public Service Commission is considering whether to approve what is known as a "determination of need" -- a key step in the project moving forward.

Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum Duel in Close Michigan Contest

With a week to go until Republicans hit the polls in primaries in Arizona and Michigan, the two leading candidates for the GOPs presidential nomination -- former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania focused Monday on the Great Lakes State.

While his father served as governor of Michigan during the 1960s and he beat John McCain to win the primary in 2008, Romney currently trails Santorum there, according to most polls, but there are signs that he is regaining his footing.
