Governor's Mansion Reception Honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Gov. Rick Scott said creating more jobs and opportunities and leveling the playing field for everyone -- that's the best way to achieve Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of a society where character, not skin color, is the determinant factor.

Speaking from the Governors Mansion Monday night in Tallahassee during a reception to honor King, Scott said the civil rights leaders dream will best be fulfilled by actions, not words.

Electricity Costs Customers More in Florida

Cutomers of Progress Energy Florida pay more than the customers of its new parent company, North Carolina-based Duke Energy -- and the diference is sizable.

According to a story in the St. Petersburg Times, "Puzzled by the Price of Power?" -- Progress Energy Florida customers pay $119.34 per 1,000 kilowatt hours of power, Progress Energy North Carolina customers pay $102.19 and Duke Energy North Carolina customers pay and $92.99.

$7.2 Billion Madoff Lawsuit Due for Settlement Thursday

The Wall Street Journal reports that a Manhattan bankruptcy judge has been asked to sign off Thursday on a $7.2 billion deal to settle the largest lawsuit in the Bernard Madoff fraud -- and it involves the late Palm Beach billionaire Jeffry Picower.

A hearing has been requested by a trustee appointed to recover funds for Ponzi-burned investors. Federal authorities announced the deal with Jeffry Picower's estate last month.

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz -- with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. -- joyously described for CNN's international audience Thursday morning what it was like to be part of the moment Wednesday when their friend Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes for the first time and touched her husband Mark's hand.

Wasserman Schultz recounted telling the Arizona congresswoman, 'Come on, you've got to get better, because we expect you up in New Hampshire this summer" at Wasserman Schultz's vacation home.

Congressman Allen West Didn't Pack Heat at Chamber Breakfast; For Another Occasion, Maybe

At a West Boca Chamber of Commerce breakfast Tuesday, Congressman Allen West, an Army veteran, was asked if he was packing heat. After all, the Senate's sergeant at arms has warned all members of Congress to stay watchful and take threats seriously.

According to a CBS12 story, at first West replied, "No, I can't tell you that." Later he said, "No, I'm not" carrying a weapon.

Progress Energy Lobbyist Ashley Turton Dies in Not-Entirely-Explained Car Fire

Ashley Turton, a high-profile lobbyist for Progress Energy, was found dead in her car Monday, in a garage behind her Washington, D.C., home, following a car crash and resultant fire.

According to Politico, authorities have not determined the exact cause of the crash or why the car caught fire. Neighbors told police Ashley Turton was heading to the airport for an early flight.

News analyses of the shooting of U.S. Rep. Garbrielle Giffords, D-Ariz. at a congressional event Saturday in Arizona -- including a Politico story headlined "Lawmakers consider their safety after Gabrielle Giffords shooting" -- connect a campaign statement by Allen West hinting at a resort to violence if citizens are unhappy with their government.

Report: Tampa-Orlando High-Speed Rail Could Cost Taxpayers $3 Billion More Than Expected

As new Gov. Rick Scott mulls over high-speed rail's cost versus public benefit, he's unlikely to miss a new Reason Foundation study and accompanying research on the proposed Tampa to Orlando project.

According to the report, if the high-speed rail line goes over budget or fails to meet ridership expectations, Florida taxpayers could get stuck with a bill of up to $3 billion.
