A Madame Tussauds and London Eye-Style Wheel in Central Florida?
As Legoland Florida, the state's newest theme park, nears completion 50 miles southwest of Orlando, the company building it is considering other British-style attractions that could go over big in Central Florida.
An Orlando Sentinel story reports that worldwide amusement company Merlin Entertainments Group claims it is looking at building -- among other possibilities -- a Madame Tussauds wax museum and a giant observation wheel similar to the 443-foot-tall London Eye on the Thames River in England.
"We do see Florida generally and Orlando specifically as a location where we would put some of these midway brands," said Nick Varney, the company's chief executive officer. "In particular, we're thinking of Madame Tussauds as an interesting proposition because, you know, it is a global brand that is the celebration of celebrity."
Merlin Entertainments' Legoland, on the site of the former Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, is the British company's first Florida venture.
Merlin is the second-busiest attractions company in the world in terms of luring visitors, behind only the Walt Disney Co.
Legoland Florida is due for completion this fall. In the United Kingdom, the Legoland attraction is located in Windsor, just outside London. One-day admission costs between $35 and $50.
