Scott Declares State of Emergency for 3 Counties Hurting from Lake 'O' Discharges
Following sustained rainfall and record Lake Okeechobee discharges, Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Friday in Lee, Martin and St. Lucie counties.
Though it isn't known exactly what Scott's declaration will mean to individual victims of the damaging fresh-water releases in each county -- whether it is meant to provide real economic relief -- it is clear the governor is using it as a tool and a soapbox to get the attention of what he considers a negligent Obama Administration.

Gov. Scott to Corps: Relieve Flooding, Flow Lake 'O' Water South

House Subcommitte Supports Bill to Fight Identity Theft in Florida Reemployment Program
The House Economic Development and Tourism subcommittee today unanimously approved HB 1017, a bill aimed to fight fraud in Florida’s Reemployment Assistance program.
Cissy Proctor, just a month on the job as executive director of the Department of Economic Opportunity, told the subcommittee, “This measure will better protect Florida’s reemployment assistance system from fraudulent criminal activity." She said the measures in the bill will improve DEO’s detection system and help bring justice to criminals who are using stolen information to collect reemployment benefits.

Former Gov. Bob Graham Cites Constitution to Join Fight against Gretna Slots
Citing the Florida Constitution, former Gov. and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham has said he opposes an expansion of gambling into Gadsden County and is looking to submit a brief to the Florida Supreme Court arguing against allowing slot machines at the Gretna Racing facility.
Graham's attorney in the matter, former legislator Dan Gelber, filed a motion Wednesday asking permission to file an amicus brief in the highly volatile case involving the Gadsden County pari-mutuel.
