Andy Gardiner Receives Rare Award for Outstanding Service to the Disabled

During a special press conference and ceremony in the Capitol Thursday -- on this Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day -- Senate President Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando was presented with the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council's 2016 Outstanding Service Award. 

Andy GardinerGardiner joins Sen. Nan Rich and Gov. Jeb Bush as the only recipients of this distinguished recognition. The council's Outstanding Service Award is presented to those who have consistently supported individuals with developmental disabilities for a long period of time. A council spokesperson said in a written statement, "It represents the council's appreciation for years of hard work in support of individuals with developmental disabilities."

Gardiner is honored for his support and oversight of additional funding for the Part C/Early Steps program and the needed funding for those on the Developmental Disabilities Home and Community-Based Services Waiver Waitlist. The council also was grateful for the Senate president's support of employment, education and asset development initiatives for individuals with unique abilities and the passage of the Florida ABLE bills, according to the statment.

Said Sylvia James-Miller, FDDC chair, "(We) would like to applaud Senate President Gardiner for his commitment to public service and his continued support of the issues and challenges for those with unique abilities. Through his help, we will be able to improve the lives of more individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities ..."
