A new TV ad is airing for Amendment 4, complete with horror-movie soundtrack. Singling out "special interests" and "zombie" developers, the spot aims squarely at builder bailouts and other scary culprits in Florida's disastrous housing bubble. Not a word, however, about comprehensive plans or other technical facets of the Florida Hometown Democracy initiative. Closing message to voters: "Drive a stake through the heart of the special interests."

Former Gov. Jeb Bush took Gov. Charlie Crist to task for a new television ad, accusing Marco Rubio, the governors Republican rival in the U.S. Senate election, of looking to slash Social Security benefits. Charlie Crist should be ashamed of his false attack against Marco Rubio on Social Security, said Bush in a statement sent out by the Rubio campaign. Charlie Crist is purposely trying to scare seniors in order to win votes.

The Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) launched a new television commercial on Tuesday attacking state CFO Alex Sink, the Democratic nominee for governor. The commercial focuses on banks that Sink worked for -- and the fraud charges they faced. Alex Sinks bank was fined millions for deceptive sales practices in her own bank branches and she claims she didnt know they were going on, said Dan Conston, a spokesman for the RPOF. Was she involved in the marketing and operations of the scam or did she not know what was going on in the lobbies of her Florida branches?

With less than a month to go until the general election, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, the Democratic nominee in the U.S. Senate race, is turning his fire away from Gov. Charlie Crist, who is running without party affiliation, onto Republican candidate former House Speaker Marco Rubio, the front-runner in the race. Now with Rubio ahead by double digits in the polls, Meek focused his attacks onto the Republican.

The campaign team of Democratic gubernatorial candidate state CFO Alex Sink responded to three Republican Latino members of Congress endorsing her Republican opponent on Monday. "This is yet another illustration of divisive partisan politics," said Kyra Jennings, a spokeswoman for Sink. "Republicans are desperate to salvage their power and save their own jobs. This has nothing to do with what's in the best interest of Floridians and who will do best by them."

In 2008 Florida's pension system, fourth largest in the country, was 100 percent funded. In fact Florida was one of only four states in such an enviable position. No longer. A consulting actuary for Milliman, Inc., told the Florida Retirement System Actuarial Assumption Estimating Conference Monday that the state is good for only 87.9 percent of the money it promised its retirees -- that's a worsened number, down from 89.3 percent last year.

Florida's public school officials complain about tight budgets, but even a recession didn't keep districts from adding staff. While the Sunshine State was losing population and shedding jobs in record numbers, school systems filled 10,985 new positions between 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. The figures compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics reveal that K-12 employment rose from 329,726 to 340,711.

It's amazing what kind of crowd you can draw when free bus rides, free lunches and free T-shirts are provided. The assemblage in Washington, D.C., over the weekend was an admixture of old-school liberals, neo-progressives, unionists, LGBTites, militant Muslims, socialists and full-blown, unreconstructed communists.
