Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Connie Mack spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday and focused on foreign policy. Mack, who is a potential challenger to Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, hammered the Obama administration and its approach to international affairs. The chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Mack took aim at Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, a frequent target of the congressman.

He also touted his budget unveiling. One thing the big accomplishment is missing, though: With just over one month in office, he fulfilled his campaign promise to sell the state planes.

Fulfilling a campaign promise and following through on one of his first official acts after being sworn in, Gov. Rick Scott approved the sale of two state planes Friday. The planes were sold for a total of $3.6 million. Scott issued an executive order his first week in office announcing his intention to sell the planes. The annual costs to the state for the planes were $2.4 million, and the sale will save Florida $560,000 this year. Scott has been using his own private plan to get around Florida.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a possible 2012 Republican presidential hopeful, will address Florida legislators Wednesday in Tallahassee. His visit is to be the first of many for 2012 Republican presidential candidates, as Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, has invited all prospective GOP candidates to address the Florida Legislature.

Two Florida politicians in Washington are reacting in slightly different ways to the Egyptian people's overthrow of their dictator-president, Hosni Mubarak. Sen. Marco Rubio, praised the accomplishment of the people and the hope it infuses to the region abroad. But the statement from Ileana Ros-Lehtinen carried more of a cautionary tone. Gov. Rick Scott made the rounds of the state Department of Environmental Protection Thursday in Tallahassee, reviewing an agency which he suggested be cut by $148.5 million and 120 employees in his budget proposal. One area of the DEP budget he didn't cut was the state parks, which Scott said were essential to maintaining Florida's natural beauty. "No, we've got great parks and we need to make sure we preserve them and take care of them," Scott said after his tour of the DEP.

Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns called out Planned Parenthood on Thursday. Pointing to videos released by Live Action, that Stearns argued showed Planned Parenthood workers willing to conspire in sex trafficking, the congressman called on U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to testify on public funding of the organization to the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee -- which the Florida congressman chairs.

Further south in the Sunshine State, Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan will be talking about jobs at Sarasota High School on Saturday.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced a new communications director for her office Friday, as Jenn Meale swaps her acting press secretary position for Gov. Rick Scott to head up Bondi's information team. Meale has also served as the communications directorfor the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and as the public information officer for Leon County.A Florida native, she is a graduate of Brown University.

President Barack Obama and House Republicans are going in opposite directions on high-speed rail. A budget plan by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., eliminates $1 billion for high-speed rail projects. Obama is expected to include $8 billion for HSR service in his fiscal 2012 budget proposal, part of a $53 billion package pushing high-speed projects across the country.

Gov. Rick Scott visited the offices of the state Department of Management Services Thursday in Tallahassee, praising Jack Miles, whom he recently tapped to head the agency, and pledging to stop the problems within the agency that led to the "Taj Mahal" debacle of the extravagant 1st District Court of Appeal courthouse. "We have a new secretary, Jack Miles, (he) is going to do a great job. He's got a great background, you know, in procurement, in contracting, so I think he'll do a good job making sure we have the right things in place," Scott said.

Senate President Mike Haridopolos stated Thursday he is against moving back Florida's date for the presidential primary in 2012. Democratic legislators have filed a bill to move the date back from the end of January, and newly-elected Republican National Committee Chair Reince Preibus urged his party to move it back during a recent trip to Tampa, the site of the 2012 Republican national convention. "I think it's a bad idea," Haridopolos said of moving the date back.
