Workforce Central Florida shut down a controversial marketing program Wednesday, ending a campaign to distribute 6,000 red capes to job seekers. The agency said its "out-of-the-box" initiative was designed to "introduce our programs and services to job seekers and employers who need them." But amid a hail of public condemnation and mockery, the agency cut short its $14,000 campaign, which an agency news release admitted "seemed to offend some." Full story will follow.

With the U.S. Department of Justice having shut down three online poker sites last week, Mark Hinkle, the chairman of the national Libertarian Party, has declared that the Obama administration has launched a War on Poker. "The Obama administration has just trampled on the rights of millions of Americans," said Hinkle. "This is also a scary reminder of President Obama's vision of a government with the power to shut down websites it doesn't like, before a trial has even started.

Who cares about the RNC threatening to undermine the Florida presidential primary if its held early? Not the leading Republican presidential candidates, according to an interesting article by Alexander Burns over at Politico. While the RNC continues to huff and puff about Florida holding an early primary, the candidates -- especially in what appears to be a very open fight for the presidential nomination -- simply cant blow off the Sunshine State.

Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, the next-in-line to be the House Minority Leader, was named early on as the Democratic point man for the redistricting process. But when members for the redistricting House committees were named Tuesday, Thurston's name was not among them. Thurston, speaking after the House Redistricting Committee's first meeting Wednesday, said that could change. "I think there's a move afoot to make that correction," Thurston said.

While just about everyone associated with BP's Gulf blowout has taken big hits during the past year, Halliburton Co. continues to sail along nicely. The oil-services company -- which made the failed cement seal widely blamed for allowing explosive gas to enter and ignite the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig -- reported a 60 percent increase in profits for 2010. On Monday, Halliburton announced that its profits for the first three months of this year more than doubled to $511 million.

Saltwater fishers in Florida will not need a license for two weekends in June, and admission to state parks will be half off on Mother's Day and Father's Day, two state agencies announced Tuesday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the parks, made the announcements during a meeting of the Florida Cabinet, being held in Panama City to mark the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Viewpoint Florida released a poll on Tuesday that showed that former Gov. Jeb Bush was routing President Barack Obama in Florida in a potential, but very unlikely, 2012 presidential match up While the former governor has expressed no interest in running for the Republican presidential nomination, the poll found 57 percent backing Bush, who served two terms as governor, while 38 percent of those surveyed backed Obama. The poll of 807 likely voters was taken on April 13 and 14 and had a margin of errorof +/- 3.5 percent.

House Democratic Leader Ron Saunders of Key West got his troops lined up for redistricting on Tuesday, sending a memo to House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, naming ranking Democrats for the three subcommittees but no ranking Democrat for the full Redistricting Committee. Saunders pointed to the exclusion of Incoming Democratic Leader Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, as the reason for this.

While U.S. Rep. Connie Mack stayed out of the crowded Republican primary field to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, he may face a serious primary challenger of his own. Politco is reporting that Chauncey Goss, son of former CIA Director Peter Goss, is contemplating running and taking on Mack in 2012. But, with the redistricting process just starting, Goss could end up in another district. Stay tuned.
