State Rep. Carlos Trujillo has a new job in the United Nations.

On Friday, President Donald Trump nominated State Rep. Carlos Trujillo, R-Miami, to serve in the United Nations as a representative to the UN general assembly.

Trujillo had been rumored to be in the running for some kind of position in the Trump administration, but was initially said to be in consideration for an ambassadorship to Argentina or Panama.

As a UN representative, Trujillo will serve as one of four deputies to former South Carolina Gov. and current UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

As a deputy, Trujillo would sit in for Haley when she is unavailable for meetings and assemblies.

Trujillo, who is bilingual, is the son of Cuban immigrants. He was born in New York but moved to Florida at the age of five. He attended college in Alabama and later went to Florida State University College of Law. He has served in the Florida Legislature since 2010.

Trujillo was an early supporter of Donald Trump on the campaign trail while many Miami Republicans were siding with U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, who was also running for the GOP presidential nomination last year.

The Miami Republican was a frequent fundraiser for Trump and was among the hosts for a $25,000 a plate fundraising dinner held for the now-president last year.

Trujillo announced Sunday he would not resign from his seat, though there are currently already several people willing to go to bat against him next year.

The race for HD 105 already has two contenders so far. Former U.S. Rep. David Rivera and Doral Republican Ana Maria Rodriguez have both already filed for the seat.

The district, which covers Miami-Dade County and part of Collier County, has elected Trujillo to the position since 2010. Last year, Trujillo narrowly defeated Democrat Patricio Moreno, taking 52 percent of the vote to Moreno’s 48 percent.
