U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., continues to rise in the Democratic ranks now that his party controls the U.S. House.
Deutch, already the chairman of the U.S. House Ethics Committee and the U.S. House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee and a cochair of the Climate Solutions Caucus, took on a new leadership post on Wednesday as he is the new vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus Task Force on Aging and Families (which was previously known as the Seniors Task Force).
According to Deutch’s office, “the new name emphasizes the focus on the needs of our nation’s older Americans, their families and future generations looking ahead to retirement.”
The task force is led by U.S. Reps. Conor Lamb, D-Penn., Doris Matsui, D-Calif., and Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill. Deutch joins U.S. Reps. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., as vice chairs.
Deutch weighed in on his new perch on Wednesday.
“Our seniors are the backbone of America. They have taken this country to extraordinary heights through a lifetime of hard work,” said Deutch. “Congress must be proactive in protecting the needs of older Americans and their families. That includes reducing the financial burden of health care, protecting retirement funds, and safeguarding Social Security from cuts and boosting benefits. Seniors need to know that their elected officials are willing to step up to defend their interests. I am proud to rejoin the Task Force under the leadership of Representatives Schakowsky, Matsui, and Lamb and honored to be named vice chair.”
First elected to Congress through a special election in 2010, Deutch represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. His district is considered safe for the Democrats in the 2020 elections.
