Obama Sinking in Democratic Poll as Base Abandons Him

October 24, 2011 - 6:00pm

A prominent Democratic organization released a poll on Tuesday that found that President Barack Obama continues to lose ground with American voters.

The poll from Greenberg Quinlan Rosner for Democracy Corps -- a group founded by three prominent Democratic strategists: James Carville, Stan Greenberg and Bob Shrum -- shows Obama upside down, with only 40 percent of those surveyed approving of his job performance in the White House while a majority -- 53 percent -- disapproved. This marks a drop of 5 percent since August.

According to the poll, Obama was hemorrhaging his supporters. Seventy-nine percent of Democrats approved of the presidents performance -- the lowest score Obama earned from members of his party in a Democracy Corps poll. Sixty-three percent of minorities surveyed approved of Obamas performance -- again, a new low for the president in a Democracy Corps poll.

While young voters backed Obama overwhelmingly in 2008, he now does worse among them than he does with the population as a whole. Less than 40 percent of likely voters under 30 back the president while 54 percent disapprove of Obamas performance in office. Back in August, a majority of these voters -- 52 percent -- approved of Obama while 42 percent disapproved.

The poll had other ominous signs for Obama as he prepares for his re-election efforts in 2012. Only 15 percent of those surveyed think the nation is on the right track, while 75 percent believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

While 65 percent of those surveyed disapproved of the performance of congressional Republicans, the poll found that Obama remained vulnerable in his bid for a second term as the economy and his failure to carry his base weigh him down.

When matched against former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, one of the leading hopefuls for the Republican presidential nomination, Obama is running dead even, with both candidates taking 45 percent each. The decline in Obamas base is evident as only 85 percent of those surveyed who backed him in 2008 continue to support the president.

The national poll from Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research for Democracy Corps of 1,000 likely 2012 voters was taken Oct. 15-18. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.
