The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) came out swinging at U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., for backing President Barack Obama’s deal with Iran over that nation’s nuclear program.
Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), announced her support for Obama’s deal with Iran earlier this month. She promptly drew fire from both left and right. Republican candidate Joe Kaufman, who was blown out by Wasserman Schultz in 2014, and conservative American Action Network (AAN) bashed the congresswoman’s support for the deal. So did Miami-Dade School Board member Martin Karp who has expressed interest in running against Wasserman Schultz in the Democratic primary after she announced her support for the Iran deal.
The NRCC joined the mix and went on the attack on Monday.
“By supporting this dangerous deal with Iran, Debbie Wasserman Schultz put our national security and the safety of our soldiers and allies at risk,” said Katie Martin, a spokeswoman for the NRCC. “Instead of taking a stand to ensure no new funds flow to terrorist groups, Wasserman Schultz dangerously voted to authorize billions for this state sponsor of terrorism.”
Wasserman Schultz looked to reinforce her credentials on national security on Sunday night as she marked Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish new year.
“My family and I will join Jews all over the world in prayer, community and reflection,” Wasserman Schultz said. “As we start the year 5776, we face serious challenges that will shape the prospects of peace and security for American Jews and Jews throughout the diaspora and in Israel. We must be vigilant in ensuring the safety of America, Israel, and our allies from those who would threaten it. Closer to home, we must continue to advocate for justice and equality for all.”
While the state judiciary is currently handling congressional redistricting which could impact her district, Wasserman Schultz represents a secure area for Democrats. Despite the 2014 election cycle being favorable to Republicans, Wasserman Schultz routed Kaufman in November, beating him 63 percent to 37 percent.
Polls have shown Florida voters are opposed to Obama’s deal with Iran.
