Meet Sen. Paula Dockery

April 20, 2010 - 6:00pm

Age: 48

Residence: Lakeland

Time in the Legislature: 14 years

Political Affiliation: Republican

Spouse: C.C. "Doc"

Children: Michele Jones, Carl

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a lawyer and I was always interested in public service.

What do you consider to be your biggest political achievement?

Being elected the first time in a district that was only 38 percent Republican and getting SB 444, relating to water supplies, passed in 2005.

What was your biggest political faux pas?

I think it was listening to, and trusting, the leadership a bit too much when I was first elected. I've learned to be more of a strong, independent voice.

Who in state government do you most admire?

The late Sen. Jim King, because he was very smart and had a great sense of humor.

Who in all the world do you most admire?

The late President Ronald Reagan, because he led with a gentle voice. And former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, because she set the tone for modern women.

Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party and why?

Former Sen. Rod Smith, because he was very bright and articulate.

What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?

I once had a man call me from a retirement home and ask me to come and speak to the residents. When I made the appearance nobody at the home knew I was coming, and it turned out the man had Alzheimer's disease.

What is your favorite place in the world?

I really like London and New Zealand for their culture and people.

What is your least favorite household chore?

I really don't like cleaning bathrooms.
