What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be an astronaut. I was a big fan of Star Trek, and I wanted to be Captain Kirk.
What do you consider your biggest political achievement?
I drafted a constitutional amendment that would cut taxes for military personnel who are currently deployed. I think we owe that to the men and women who are serving overseas in defense of our country.
What was your biggest political faux pas?
In my first televised debate when I was running for office, I kept a big smile on my face throughout the debate. I had that ear-to-ear smile regardless of the issue or my opponent's response. It really made me look foolish.
Who in state government do you most admire?
Rep. Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, because he's intelligent, has a very good grasp on the issues and is always respectful of his colleagues regardless of what their political affiliation might be.
Who in all the world do you most admire?
My late grandfather Jack Horner. He was one of the most intelligent, honest and respectful men I've ever met. The lessons he taught me are things I will remember and put into practice every day of my life.
Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party and why?
Rep. Joseph Abruzzo, D-Wellington, because he's principled, he's pro-business and he is always respectful of his colleagues. I think he really understands the needs of the state and knows how to bring members of both parties together to meet those needs.
What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?
I can't think of any.
What is your favorite place in the world?
At home with my wife and child. I always make my family my top priority. Although I'm very busy with my time in the Legislature and with the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce, I always make time to spend with the most important people in my life.
