What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A firefighter, and I achieved that goal by becoming the fire chief of Miami Beach.
What do you consider to be your biggest political achievement?
Getting legislation passed to protect first responders who are exposed to HIV in the line of duty.
What was your biggest political faux pas?
I've been told that at times I've been too outspoken.
Who in state government do you most admire?
Jack Seiler, the current mayor of Fort Lauderdale. He was a member of the House when I was a freshman and he was very knowledgeable and helpful to me.
Who in all the world do you most admire?
Former President Lyndon Johnson, who helped greatly with the Freedom Flighters from Cuba, where I was born and raised, and Henry "Scoop" Jackson.
Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party, and why?
We have a very close-knit group of legislators from both parties who represent Miami and Dade County, and I really respect Rep. Eddy Gonzalez and all the rest of that group.
What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?
I had a guy who wanted me to get cock-fighting legalized. A lot of people want to bring back the old customs from Cuba.
What is your favorite place in the world?
I love Miami Beach.
What is your least favorite household chore?
I'm a neat freak, but I really don't like to clean windows.
