What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I always wanted to be a legislator. Since a very young age, I have had a passion for politics and held several offices when I was in school. I was student body president at Lynn University in Boca Raton.
What do you consider to be your biggest political achievement?
I've had five bills that I sponsored passed as a freshman and a Democrat. Chief among them are "Nicole's Law," HB 169, which requires minors to wear a helmet when riding a horse in certain locations; and the Energy Star bill, HB 167, which brought $17.6 million dollars in stimulus money into the state. It authorizes the Florida Energy & Climate Commission to develop consumer rebate programs for specified energy-efficient appliances.
What was your biggest political faux pas?
I haven't had any that I remember.
Who in state government do you most admire?
Sen. Dave Aronberg, D-Greenacres. He's an effective leader, has a clear vision of what he wants to accomplish and is able to work well with both parties.
Who in the world do you most admire?
Hillary Clinton, because she was a first lady, a United States senator and now secretary of state -- and she has done an excellent job in all three roles.
Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party and why?
Rep. Dean Cannon, Rep. Bill Galvano and Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff.Although I don't agree with their politics, I do respect the fact that they are able to listen to both sides and get their jobs done.
What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?
I don't think any constituent requests are wacky. Although they may sound unusual at times, I respect the fact that my constituents care enough to get in touch with me.
What is your favorite place in the world?
I was born and lived in Chicago until I was 12. But my formative years were spent in Palm Beach County, and there's no other place I'd rather be. It's an honor and a privilege to represent my district.
What is your least favorite household chore?
Making the bed, especially if there's someplace I need to be early in the morning.
