Meet Rep. Carl Domino

March 31, 2010 - 6:00pm

Age: 65

Residence: Jupiter

Time in the Legislature: 8 years

Political Affiliation: Republican

Spouse: Sharon

Children: Mason, Reagan

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I never really had one thing that I wanted to be. My father had a 26-year career in the Marine Corps, so I grew up in different places all over the world. I have a degree in accounting from Florida State University and was admitted to their first law school class, but at 26, I attended and graduated from the Harvard University Business School.

What do you consider to be your biggest political achievement?

Portability, which was HJR 0033, assessing at less than just value property purchased within one year after a sale of homestead property. That gives a 50 percent exemption on property not to exceed $200,000 for tax purchases assisting first-time home buyers in making their first home purchase.

What was your biggest political faux pas?

I really can't think of one. I guess that's because I'm really not outspoken and I try not to draw a lot of attention to myself.

Who in state government do you most admire?

Allan Bense was the speaker of the House when I was a freshman, and I've never met anyone that I've respected more. He was clear in his vision and outstanding in his leadership. However, his greatest asset was his ability to show respect to every member regardless of their political affiliation.

Who in all the world do you most admire?

Rudy Giuliani because he inherited a corrupt city, one that was unsafe, and he cleaned it up. He also took the helm during the 9/11 crisis and led the city of New York through its darkest period. I can't think of any other people who could have accomplished those complicated tasks.

Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party and why?

I think both parties have moved away from the center and more moderate views and more toward the extremes. I think this is not only harmful and polarizing but hurts the citizens. I can't think of anything that could draw both parties further apart.

What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?

I can't think of any. I'm fortunate in that I represent a really great part of the state. My constituent requests are well thought out and very helpful to the work I do.

What is your favorite place in the world?

I'm very happy right where I am. I think I live in the best place in the state and have the opportunity to work in a city that I love. I've traveled all over the world and there are many great places. But, I'm happiest when I'm home.

What is your least favorite household chore?

My family and I are very blessed in the fact that we are well enough off that we don't have to do many household chores. We have a great staff at home that does those chores.
