Inspector General Ron Russo

June 16, 2011 - 6:00pm

Ron Russo

Name

Age
41

If you graduated from college, where did you go?
I graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology.

How long have you live in Tallahassee?
More than 10 years.

Where do you work, what is your position there and how long have you worked for this company?
In December 2010, I was appointed to serve as the inspector general for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Are you married? If so, how many children do you have?
I have been married more than 11 years and have a young son.

What brought you to your current job?
In my career as a law enforcement professional, I have truly enjoyed serving the public in ways that I believe make a difference. My current role as inspector general allows me the opportunity to have a greater positive impact within government.

One of the most important considerations for a new position is the type of leadership within the organization. As a newly elected agriculture commissioner with a tremendous record of public service, Adam Putnam has brought a strong vision to the department and a desire to make government better. So it was a great honor to join his management team, where I can contribute to the departments ambitious goals.

Describe what you do?
As inspector general I am responsible for identifying and eliminating waste, fraud and abuse within the department. This is accomplished through the management of highly qualified auditors who examine various internal programs, and law enforcement professionals who investigate employee misconduct and criminal activity. Additionally, I work closely with operational managers in a collective effort to refine and streamline their processes, saving both time and money.

What were you doing the last five years of your life?
Prior to joining the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, I enjoyed the rewarding opportunities to serve the public in various capacities such as the inspector general for the Florida Department of Transportation and interim deputy secretary for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations. In each role, I looked for ways to create greater efficiencies, reduce unnecessary regulations and find ways to more judiciously utilize taxpayer dollars.

What do you want to do with your life long-term?
My long-term goal is to get more involved with various charitable organizations. Having been involved with several, I find that helping those in need and giving back to the community provides a tremendous feeling of satisfaction.

What do you do in your free time?
My free time is usually spent with my family, but I also enjoy woodworking and fishing.

If you could be granted one wish right now, what would it be?

I would wish that a cure for cancer be discovered. Many of us have been touched in some way by this disease.Although great strides have been made in cancer research, according to the American Cancer Societys 2010 Cancer Facts and Figures, it is currently the cause of every one in four deaths in the United States.Particularly distressing are the childhood cancers that are expected to affect almost 11,000 children this year.

What would you change about Tallahassee and/or the Capitol if you could?
I really enjoy Tallahassee with its vast history and small-town feel. However, if I could change anything, it would be the high pollen count that seems to be present all year, affecting a lot of residents.
