If Trump is GOP Nominee, Dems Have White House in the Bag

Donald Trump’s victory on Super Tuesday ensures Democrats will stay in the White House for another four years, according to a poll released this week from CNN.

A hypothetical matchup between Trump and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders shows either Democratic candidate would easily topple trump come November.

Clinton comes out ahead of Trump in the CNN/ORC poll, taking 52 percent to Trump’s 44 percent of likely registered voters, a number which has increased since the last time the two groups conducted the same survey in January.

Clinton’s lead isn’t quite as solid when she’s put against either one of the two second contenders in the GOP race, which indicates if Clinton were to be put against either one of those candidates, the road to victory wouldn’t be quite so smooth.

When faced off against Sen. Marco Rubio, Clinton actually trails the Florida Republican, with 50 percent of voters choosing Rubio while a smaller percentage -- 47 percent -- said they’d vote for the former Secretary of State instead.

The race is a little closer between Clinton and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who leads her by 49 percent to her 48 percent of the vote.

Democrats’ chances at winning the White House for a third election cycle are amplified with a Sanders candidacy, says the poll.

Sanders stomps on possible Republican opponents across the board, crushing Cruz by 57 to 40 percent, trouncing Trump by 55 to 43 percent, and routing Rubio 53 to 45 percent.

When it comes to candidate favorability, Rubio performs the best out of the top three Republican contenders, with 44 percent of likely voters seeing him favorably. Trump is upside down in terms of favorability, with only 38 percent seeing him in a positive light while 60 percent view him unfavorably.

Clinton is also viewed unfavorably by the majority of likely voters, with 53 percent seeing her unfavorably while 44 percent view her in a positive light. Bernie Sanders has the highest favorability rating of any candidate, with 57 percent seeing him favorably.

Trump currently has 377 delegates of the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the Republican presidential candidacy. Cruz has 226 delegates, while Rubio has 110 delegates.

On the Democratic side, Clinton has 1,052 of the 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination. Sanders has 427 delegates.

If the above poll numbers hold true for next Tuesday’s election, which will prove to be the tipping scale for Republican nominees, a Democrat is sure to win the White House on Election Day if Trump secures the GOP nomination.

The CNN/ORC Poll was conducted by telephone February 24-27 among a random national sample of 1,001 adults. Results among the sample of 920 registered voters have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
